I had a 87 twin cam that I had fitted with a 20v by a performance shop - and the 20v gave similar performance to a sss pulsar. The newer model 89 corolla is around 100kgs heavier than the older model, so the 20v will not have as great an effect in performance as it did with my 87 corolla.
The 20v swap cost me around $2k including new clutch, radiator, plugs, hoses, oil, belts, wiring (engine was $2k with everything). Only the wiring presented problems as at the time I did not have a full pin out diagram.
Incidently, since then I've fitted a 4AGZE to my newer 90 sx corolla myself and the gze is all over the 20v. Don't get me wrong, the 20v is a great little engine, really smooth and fun to drive with its rev happy nature. But a gze has so much more torque, and you don't need to rev it to bits to have some fun.
Hope this helps
