well i carefully recorded the engine number before fitting the engine into my mr2. now the car is all up & running and ready for engineering, but i can't find the piece of paper with the number on it!!

engine bay is very crampt so i can't see the engine number - anyone know exactly where it is is i can take a tracing etc of it? from memory it was near the distributor end of the motor.......

Pretty sure its on a flat section of block just past the 4th cylinder. Exhaust side naturally.
Similar position to the 4As if i remember correctly.

If you were looking end-on at the distributor end of the motor, the numbers are stamped into the top edge of the block - the 3S is on the left side, and the serial number is on the right side.

A piece of white masking tape might work if you rub a pencil across it once it's in there?

rub a cloth with alcohol on that surface so the tape will stick, then stick a piece of thin tape in there, then gently rub the tape with a pencil, then peel the tape off the block? It might work...

Yep, back of the block just below the head. Have you tried a mirror and light too? I use a broken piece of wing mirror and break it to suit the job.

I had to ask the same question recently and even though I now know where the engine number is I'll be stuffed if I can see it.

aagghhh!! can't get to it - have to pull 1/2 the car apart tonight to hopefully get it! drat.

odd are as soon as iv'e done it i'll find the carefully secreted bit of paper with hte number on it.
