The benefits of extractors on a 7M Tue, 29 June 2004 07:14 Go to next message
I went to an exhaust shop today and enquired about exhaust systems for my 7MGE Cressida. Evil or Very Mad

I asked what power gain I would expect from a set of extractors. The guy I spoke to said to expect at least 25% increase. I was tempted to say "bullshit you fucking liar" but didn't because I am no expert and have no evidence to the contrary. 25% would seem kinda high. Confused

What is the general rule with adding extractors and power? Has anyone dyno'd their 7M before and after?

Info please. Smile

Ps: I tried to search but I never have luck finding relevant info.

It's only 25% if you buy the stickers and stick them to your door.
I doubt you would notice any 'seat of the pants' difference, particularly when done not in conjunction with other modifications. Ask ed_ma61 - he did this only recently.

As I was only tentatively enquiring... ie: unlikely to actually buy them in the near future... I didn't make him ring around for an exact price. He did however say that I should expect $500 - $950. I think that was just for the extractors. Shocked I then proceded to run out of the shop screaming and clutching my wallet. Razz

4/5ths of fuck all

anything that increases total flow of a system needs to be supported by the flow character of the rest of the system in order to realise results. headers will do nothing but look good and sound different on an otherwise stock engine.

even on my engine, gains were minimal - really minimal.

to make it worthwhile, you really need to port, cam, and intake your eninge in a LARGE way. NA horsepower DOES NOT come easily. every hp requires $$$ and blood

What mods could I do that don't require the engine being pulled apart again? I was thinking extractors because they are effectively bolt on and would only improve things. ie: more power, more efficiency and no extra parts that would need maintaining.

BUT, if it aint gonna help much theres no point. Smile What will make a difference? Anything??? Confused Should I just forget about performance upgrades until I can afford some real hardware like a turbo? Sad Sad Sad

Well if you havent allready you could port match the headers and intake, these are tiny gains but for NA its what you have to do to make the differences. Have you allready increased the size of the factory exhaust system? if not thats a good thing to do as well, the stock item is piss small and restrictive.

As ED said it takes a lot of money to make a NA hum. Probhably the best thing you could do to get the most gain in one hit is to buy an aftermarket ecu and get it dyno tuned, at that point you may as well also get some adjustable cam gears.. on that point how many 7M guys would be interested in a set? im thinking of getting some made up.

you could also throw in some bigger cams, theres not all that much to pull apart to get them in but the cost is pretty big again, and dont forget youll need to re-shim as well.

Try bolting a turbo onto it. Technically you won't have to pull the motor apart again until the headgasket blows. Laughing

I bet right now you're thinking "why didn't I port/polish/modify the head whilst it was off?" You could do all the extractors, CAI blah blah blah but on an otherwise stock engine it'll do bugger all.

Agree with 1RALLY about the aftermarket management though - the stock computer is probably one of the biggest restrictions to HP, esp if you are modding the engine.

I think I will just leave it for a while... I have spent thousands getting it rebuilt and reinstalled less than 2months ago.

The easiest way to make my Cressida go quicker is by ripping shit out of it like seats and window motors. Razz Razz Razz
