hi all, im giving a mate a hand to do a few things on his hilux 4wd and one of the things on the list is to fit a air compressor. i was wondering if it would be posible to fit the air conditioning compressor to suit the car (the car does not curently have air con) and use it as a compressor? it would be used for pumping up tyres after sand driving and the like.

The only problem I can see with this ( not to say there aren't others ) is lubrication of the compressor. In the air con system the oil that lubricates the compressor flows through the system with the gas and does not just stay in the compressor. This means you would need some sort of system to put oil into the compressor with the air intake and remove it from the air that is coming out.
If you can solve this problem it just might work but then again it might work out cheaper and easier to just go to a 4wd place and buy a compressor kit that drives off the engine.

You could use the old school piston-type aircon pumps for blowing up tyres etc, but they displace stuff all air anyway, and are a bit slow. Have tried it and, basically, they suck!
