I REALLY need help with a 5ME please! Wed, 30 June 2004 06:52 Go to next message
Hello.

I've got an 84 Celica Supra MA61 - with the 2.8L 5ME engine, and recently cracked the cylinder head. After spening lots and lots of time and money replacing it with a reconditioned one from a wrecker, and putting the engine back together, we(Me and my Dad) have a problem.

The symptoms are that when you try to start it, it immediately floods itself with fuel and refuses to start. It can be successfully started by pulling out the fuse for the fuel pump, cranking it over until it drys itself out and then starts, and then quickly putting the fuse back in before it runs out of fuel. It will idle normally after this is done.

That's not the whole problem though, as soon as you rev the engine, it immediately floods itself and cuts out. If you rev it gradually, it seems to creep up the revs further, but still cuts out all the same.

I'm certain we put the engine back together properly, as we labeled everything we took off, and put it back where it came from.

Can anyone help me? Please!

My first guess would be dodgy cold start injector (CSI); I had similar problems with my 18R-GEU and that's what it turned out to be. Try disconnecting the CSI from the fuel rail and see if the problem goes away. If not, you have ECU issues which might be difficult to track down!

By the way, my car is still ****ed, I'm posting this to get my thread back on the first page.

We've checked the afm and the cold start injecter.
We didn't touch the computer, so it should be fine, as it was before this mess.

The engine is just running too rich for some reason and flooding itself. Especially when I rev the car. A heap of smoke comes out the exhaust.

It sounds like something simple because occasionly it idles fine, almost normally.

Can anyone help?

how do you know its "flooding"?

r u certain that its a overly rich mixture thats causing the problem.

what r the symtoms exactly?

is it all cylinders or just a couple.?

dont be 2 certain that your diagnosis is correct.
