icon5.gif  MX83 Brakes Wed, 30 June 2004 09:57 Go to next message
I've picked up a set of front brake rotors (that can't be returned) for my 89 MX83 only to find out that the models between '88-'90 and '90-'92 have different size rotors.

By different size I mean that the thickness of '88-'89 is 20mm and the '90-'92 is 22mm.

My question is therefore two fold:

Will the 22mm rotors fit on my car?

And if they won't, would there be any benefit in sourcing the '90-'92 model calipers and replacing mine (assuming that is possible without needing to modify anything)?

Failing all of the above I'll have a brand new set of rotors up for sale soon.

Thanks for any help that you can provide.

Brad

Providing that the bearings and hub seal are the same and they don't sit out or in from where the original ones are then yes you should be able to use them with your calipers.
You may have enogh clearance to get the pads to fit but if not then you can get some materail taken off the pads or better yet get the dics machined down a bit but not to far and all should be well.
Thats what i would do anyway.

If you're changing your brakes, why not change to something decent? Stock MX83 brakes are pissweak!

I'm doing a brake upgrade on my Supra using MX83 struts, BA Falcon rotors and R33 Skyline 4-piston alloy calipers. It all bolts right up and it will be a massive improvement over stock MX83 brakes.

The brake upgrade sounds good, but unless I can buy the package already done, I'm stuffed. I have no skills in that area.

What sort of money wound we be talking about? I seem to remember reading that even the brake pads for that set up are hugely expensive.

The brake upgrade I'm talking about here is no more difficult than what you're doing already; it's just a matter of bolting on discs and calipers.

As for pads, I haven't priced them yet but all you need is R32/R33 Skyline or Z32 300ZX pads, and I can't see why they'd be hugely expensive compared to other cars?

Sorry Norbie, must have been the calipers that I read where expensive. I just priced a pair of '91 MX83 calipers at $60.00 each, so I think that will be the way I go (seeing that I've already got the rotors and don't really have a budget for anything more).

www.discpads.com.au have good prices on pads and rotors.

start highjack

Are you upgrading the rears as well or just the fronts?
If so what is the plan for the rears?

end highjack

He is leaving his stock at the moment (they are pretty good with vented discs athat are about 260mm dia.

I just upgraded the rears on mine to W140 Merc rears (300mm dia x 22mm thic vented) to go with the upgraded fronts - Scubie WRX STi 326mm dia x 30mm thick.

Cheers

What he said. I'll upgrade the rears only if they prove to be inadequate, which frankly is unlikely to happen unless I circuit race it on a regular basis.

I am to do a bit of cct work at Mallala which is VERY hard on brakes.

Besides Norbs, those PINK wipers will help the braking as well hehehe

Norbie

I have a MX83 89' with a 1JZGTE and want it to feel better when it needs to stop.

For the upgrade using the R33 calipers and BA rotors- is that using the standard 298mm or the 325mm rotors from the XR8?

Do the R33 calipers bolt on using the standard holes on the MX83 struts?

thanks
b

That's using the 298mm rotors, and yes you use the standard holes in the struts.
