oil catch can vs filter on 1jz?

*did a search*
The little pipe that goes between the cam cover and inlet pipe has broken due to age. I read that this is essentially the only difference between the slightly earlier 1jz and the slightly later 1jz's. (twin turbo - notice no 1st gen and 2nd gen )
So I want to know how I should go about the replacement? My friend has a setup like the first pic on his RB20 but hasn't had it long enough to comment on its use. So which is better and why?

or 2. (thanks Danish )

thanks

filters congest and drip oil everywhere - hence the need for a 'catch can'

so if the engine has bad blowby then the can is a must and if it is in pretty good condition then you could get away with a filter?

I haven’t seen any blow by in my engine, so you probably don't need one. Of course it depends on the age of the engine. I'm still suspicious that the can should be connected to the other side where the outlet from the cam cover goes into the inlet manifold.
Just make sure that the filter can breath properly. I don't think it's a big issue, it may be something a cop notices though.

a filter would be for keeping stuff from getting into the engine, and is useless for an outlet, except for looks.
