Anyone know anything about alarms?

My Alarm/immobiliser/central locking doesn't work half the time. The light on the remote flashes but the car won't respond. I've tried putting a new battery in it but it didn't really fix it.
Can someone help me? I'm not sure why it works sometimes and it won't other times.

i would suggest that the reciever in the car has probably seen better days, as for the solution i don't have one, we ended up reqiring my mates car, as and immobilser makes it so the car doesn't move, he was rather unimpressed, we found that the reciever would respond in some places better then others, this may be the case if its only working part of the time.

I've found with my immobiliser remote if you press the button quickly it responds fine but if you hold the button in a bit too long it doesn't always work. This may be the case with yours also??

I've recently built an alarm into my RA23 and it works fine from all angles and up to about 10-15m distance. I've also built the same alarm into a RAV4 and that doesn't work well from certain angles. Apparently there are "blind spots" where the receiver can't see the transmitter. This may have something to do with the position of the receiver in the car. Try to put it in a spot where it is not surrounded (or enclosed) by too much metal.

alarms and all electronic components can all be quite dicky things. in my line of work i find myself pulling out faulty alarms quite regularly. if the alarm stops all together, sometimes it can be fixed by simply "re-setting " it by finding the main unit and simply unplugging it and re-connecting. some poor quality alarms have a short life of only around 3 to 4 years. and given the low price of some new alarms it is simply cheaper to replace than fix. best ring a local stereo or alarm supplier/fitter and get them to have a look and tell you whether its worth fixing. most of the time it isn't.

what brand is ur alarm?(vision?)
it sounds like ur remote is "dropping out". this is a common thing. u need to reset your alarm (check manual if u have it), this will reprogram your remote/s, failing that, go to your local car audio/security store and they can do it.
ur reciever is (most likely)built into the module like most modern alarms. to relocate it could prove difficult, u would most likely end up re-intalling the alarm and lenghtening the wires etc... the module will be underneath the steering column.

It's a mongoose alarm and it came with the car. Im pretty sure that the alarm is at least about 5 years old. I only have one remote for it.
I think i have found the module and the antenna, but even using the remote at point blank range with the antenna wasn't working this arvo. I had a bit of a fiddle with it which fixed it for half a day now, i cant get it to work at all.
Could i simply install a new alarm system, using the old wires etc. and just replace the unit, hooking up existing wires, sensors etc.
I don't have the manual for the alarm, so does anyone know how to reset a mongoose alarm?
Thanks again for the help guys.

yeah once again that sounds very simular to what happened to the astina's alarm system, and unfortunately we didn't find the solution to fixing that, it turned out the reciever just died, and he had his mechanic wire around the immobiliser, but he still has a flashing red LED...
i hope you can fix it.
