A Lesson Learned

..and as usual, it was the hard way.
On Monday I was made redundant at work.
So, yesterday, wanting to clear the cobwebs I took off down the GO Road for a long drive.
Despite the weather, by the time I got to Apollo Bay, I had a big smile on my face and was feeling pretty good. Sadly, it all went pear shaped heading up the Skenes Creek road when the Sprinter stopped suddenly without warning.
After all the fallout it turns out the timing belt was stripped.
Now, I'm a big believer in servicing a vehicle properly and replacing items at the correct intervals. Just why I didn't replace the timing belt when I bought the vehicle is beyond me. It seems that the belt that broke yesterday was the original item that had lasted 150k kilometres. Now that I know they're only a $20 item and the job itself is easy, I'm kicking myself pretty hard.
So for all of those of you buying a second hand car that has a motor with a timing belt, get it replaced immediately unless you know the service history of the car. It's better to pay $100 including labour to replace the item then it is to pay the same amount to some guy with a tow truck to come and get the car when it stops in the middle of nowhere.
It hasn't been my week...
Cheers,
Dan

yep get heaps of them at work. just think yourself lucky its a free-spinning engine. otherwise youd be up for new valves amongst other things. many a customer has learnt the hard way that you should replace timing belts when specified.
