Engineer cert for seats on stock rails? Sat, 03 July 2004 05:24 Go to next message
I went to get rego today and I have obx buckets that fit perfectly on the stock rail holes and the guy wouldnt pass it and said I need an engineer cert for them? Belts etc are untouched.

Is that right?. It didnt pass rego, coz I also had a leaky exhaust which I will get fixed but I mean bleh the seats?.

In QLD if you fit aftermarket seats to the stock rails without modification, its perfectly legal and no engineers cert is needed.

if you keep in mind that you live in SYD then you will start to realise that you need an engineers cert to take a sump these days

but to answer your Q, yes you do need an engineers for the seats

Its not classed as a mod in QLD. I say ring an engineer in your state and ask the simple question.

yeh i guess your right. But to prove how stupid this rule is... check this little word play I came up with:

The seats ARENT modified. Why?. Because they arent in the damn car anymore... They have been REPLACED by seats that fit on stock rails. So there is NO actual modifying. Just REPLACING.

Logically thinking..... this means you need an engineers certificate if you take out the originals and replace them with a different colured original seat no modding, just replacing.

Hell lets extend the law to using different brand oil filters?.

HEY DOOD YOU NEED AN ENGINEER CERT coz your using a RYCO filter...... ehhhh but dood it fits on the standard thread?.... nah that doesnt matter Rolling Eyes

Whats next, engineer certs for carpet?

But really I can see the danger in having a bunch of cars out there with chopped up seat rails that are bodgy... hence car in accident = seats coming lose... blah. How much am I looking at to get an egineer to take a 5min look at the seats? Perhaps someone could reccomend a place.

A seat is a seat right??

If you have an accident, the seat breaks, you get ejected through the back window of the car and by some miracle survive. What will you do? Run straight to a lawyer and ask Who can I sue?!?! Your lawyer will go straight after the workshop that did the 'safety check' for rego and probably the RTA.

The guy that did the rego check isn't qualified to make a decision on whether the seat meets australian standards so he's asking you to get it checked by someone that is qualified, fuck lets crucify the prick!!! How dare he!!

Dodgy sprinter?? keep your shitbox off the road that me, my wife and my kid use thanks!! Or simply do the right thing and make it roadworthy.

It's not the rails they are looking at it is the seat it self.

I remember reading somwhere that seats now need to have ADR compliance to even have a chance of being engineered in NSW.

Engineering is pretty much summed up but working out what can happen in any accident. in most (if not all) cases the seats will be put under stress and need to be engineered to provide occupant saftey. anything else that can come loose when understress and potentially cause injury to the occupants needs to be engineered. It's all red tape aimed at keeping idiots from sueing in accidents.

In this case the rails are fine if ther are factory but in an accident that isn't going to help if the seats are sitting on the bonnet or in front of the car and the rails are happily sitting where they are ment to be.

This might sound dumb but shouldn't the seats have a compliance sticker on them telling the guy doing the rego that they comply to the australian standards, just like helmets for a motor bike.

I don't see the problem if the OBX seats are ADR approved and the rails haven't been modified at all.

If you go to a decent engineer they will tell you if don't need an engineers cert. and tell you why... then you can go back to the pink slip place and explain it to them!
