TA22 diff strength?

Does anyone know how much the TA22 diff can take power wise?? Also I have problems with a 2 1/2" exhaust over the diff, when there is some weight in the back the exhaust always hits the diff, is this something I have to put up with??

the diff will last about 5 seconds if treated bad... if driven nicely i could last a little while, but deffinately not a long term solution... something more serious is a must!!!
as for the exhaust, i'm a big fan of having the exhaust going under the diff housing, just to one side of the diff centre. although i have not done this, or ever seen it done, i hear that APEXi make an exhaust for the AE86 that goes under the diff, their N1 spec!!! with short stroke shocks, i imagine it could be a possibility, and i'm keen to try it one day on my TA22. who has? i'd love to know if it's a good idea!!!

G'day,
i have busted a couple of diffs...
both behind my 18rg... used to drive it pretty hard.
and behind my 1ggte... drive it VERY softly.
basically they are pretty weak if you want to drive your car hard...
I have my 3in mandrel bend under the diff.... to pass engineering i fitted rally style straps (made from seatbelts) that limit the drop of the diff... not neccesary if you want to buy shorter shocks....
Cheers
Stew

I know of a celica in adelaide putting out 230KW thru a stock ta22 diff ..
hasnt broken yet ..
hes running a worked 3tgte too , thru stock t50 ( heacier clutchplate ) and stock diff .. been running perfectly so i believe for 2 years ..
I guess it comes down to how you drive - If you drop the clutch it will go BOOm - drive sensibly and feed the power and alls sweet ..

Sebta22,
The diffs are a good lightweight unit if you don't expect to much out of them. It really does come down to how you drive it and your level of Traction.
I have had very worked 2TG's in front of stock diffs and had no problems.
Then again Last time Tina's car made an attempt at eastern creek it got limped home with a sheared axel, Blown centre and busted rear uni joint (all on 102 RWHP) so yeah comes down to how you drive it !
I would suggest it will not be up to your requirement however !

Thanks guys!
I most probably will replace diff. I am looking at having discs at rear, I have read that there several options: shorten hilux, shortened pintara or VN shortened and pattern change. Which option is the best?? Cost and modification wise??

is a 22 the same diff as a 23? if so then my brother blew one, claims he hit a big pot hole and thats when it happened but hard to belive think it had something to do with him always getting compression lockups anyway that was in a 18-RC and when we drained it we got a big tooth fall out thats why i refuse in doing dohnuts (often) as i don't count on the diff being able to take it.

Depends which model, but the mid 70's ones (RT104) came with the same T series diff as RWD Celicas.

Skyline, not pintara - avoid that tiny little 2 pinion one at all costs. The 4 pinion skyline one is the same centre as a falcon/commodore (I stole my LSD from a clubsport)
