MX83 problems Mon, 05 July 2004 12:18 Go to next message
Hey Guys,
I just bought my MX83 GLX and found a weird little problem. The motor for the electric antenna won't actually lift the antenna up anymore. It still has power (Cause it makes an awfully loud humming noise) and stills retracts the antenna. As far as i know the easiest solutions is to replace it with a cheaper one from a Car Audio Shop, like Straithfield or something.
Any help appreciated greatly.

Yeah, my MX73 one does that.

I got inspired one day, pulled it apart, cleaned it up and put it back in with the aerial up.
Turned the radio on, then turned it off and she went down, then i turned the radio back on, and she wouldnt come up.

So I just pulled her up 40odd cm, unplugged the aerial (the power, not the signal cable) and she stays there.

I havent gotten around to pulling her out again and actually fixing her.

But remember, you can get cheap ones, but the cheaper they are, the noisier they are, and the short life span they have.

Get an Aerpro one IMO.

I know this may be a little late to be of use.

I had the same problem, but at $200+ for a toyota one, there was no way it was being replaced. However the mast was only $60 (still not that cheap) When you pull them appart, there is a little cylindrical piece of metal that keeps the nylon "rack" in contact with the drive gear. The metal piece had a flaw in it that didn't keep the rack directly in contact with the drive gear, thus destroying the rack. Obviously, this kind of fault is relatively common, so have a look at the piece of metal pushing the rack onto the drive gear. All I did was buy the new mast and turn the metal so that the flaw faced away from the rack (superglued in place so that a repeat could not occur) and haven't had any trouble since.

My car is a daily driver and I haven't had any trouble in 4 years since.
