G'day peoples, I'm new and always wanting to learn more about my car, so please be nice to me.

I have a 83 Model Hilux running a tired and old 18R engine. I suspect its about to give up the ghost as I used to have a RA40 celica and obviously that had a 18R-C in it too and my celica NEVER used as much oil as this hilux does.

My question is what models of engine could I replace my 18R engine with in the Hilux. I think the 18R is somewhat underpowered and would like to invest in some more power BUT nothing that is going to leave me so broke that I cant afford to drive it!! Any suggestions on some suitable engines that will just hook up to it. Its the 4X4 model with a 4 speed standard gearbox so I'm sure that will have something to do with my options as I wouldn't be too keen to have to replace this too.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!

easy conversions:

22r
1gg series

getting harder conversions:

7mge / 7mgte

complex conversions:

1/2j
1mzfe
1uzfe (best conversion!)

depends on whether you can do most of the work yourself or you have to pay someone to do it for you

22R or 1G-Gx(x) would be the cheapest and most straightforward, but as in all engine conversions there is extra stuff to do and spend money on.

thanks guys,

I reckon I will end up going with a 22R as it seams to be the eaisest of the engines to source down here in tassie.

Hopefully it will be mostly straight forward
