4AGE blown head gasket questions...
|

I woke up sunday morning with a hangover, only to discover my missing coolant had made friends with my oil
I'm getting the toyota workshop manual for the how-to (AE82 twincam16)
I intend to fix this myself, but I've got a few questions..
- Should I use genuine toyota gaskets? (~$90)
- Should I replace head studs? (daily driver, not a track warrior)
- What is a possible cause of this HG failure, given that the engine is still perfectly drivable with no noticable loss of compression?
- Am I likely to find a warped head?
- Is the head likely to be corroded, and need welding and straightening?
- If so, am I better off getting a s/h head from the wreckers than repairing this one?
Cheers..

Hey dude...
You have a few options in my opinion.
You "Could" fix your current engine.. But to do it properly your going to need a full Gasket kit.. Yes i would use genuine ones.. after all the stuffing around and work its not worth it..
I would just buy a import 4age for around $600-700 i believe and replace it.
To do the gasket properly you would really need to get the head decked and crack tested.. You wouldnt want to do all the work and then find out your head is cracked.. Also its a pain in the ass to clean all the Creamy goop from your engine..
Just replace in man..

Well you have two options IMHO...
1, you can buy another second hand engine and hope it stays together without any attention for a while (not very likely especially if its been sitting for a while and the seals have dried up) so it wont cost more money when you need to fix that one too.
or
2, pull it out and do a full rebuild while youre at it, if you plan to keep the car for a whil;e this is the best option, dont worry about using toyota gasket kits (I think youll find theyre a lot more than $90 ), theyre way overpriced in comparison to other suppliers and if you really want to go cheap you can make most of them yourself pretty easily while youre waiting for the block to be cleaned etc.

its not really necessary but recommended just have a close look at the bolts to make sure theyre not *too* stretched and they should be fine, ive never replaced a set yet nad have had no complaints from the people Ive done rebuilds for or from my own engines ( touching lots of wood!! )

this is very hard to answer without pulling it all apart and looking at it, it could be anything from head deterioration to a fine leak that has got worse over time in the gasket or just general wear

that depends how much it overheated or if that was the cause in the first place..I generally get the head skimmed as a precaution, and if it needs it the block as well, as for replacing the head itd probhably work out better to get your head re-cod. than waste money on another head which may also be warped.

that depends on the quality of the servicing youve given your car over the years, if its just had tap water thrown about then yes you may find you need to do some repairs, I know of a good place to get it done if this shows to be the case.
personally Id do the bottom end while its all apart, its not really much more work and a set of bearings is only about $80, you could even go to a bigger piston and get a rebore for a bit more comp ( I think theres a set for sale on the forums at the moment that have even been balanced? )if you wanted to while you were at it, at least you would know that the compression will be good afterwards where as a heat stressed block could have lost some of its compression, the bores should be checked for round while the heads off in any case. Plus if you buy a full gasket kit (not VRS) then you will have everything you need in terms of gaskets to do it anyhow.

cheers guys
The engine was *supposedly* reconditioned by the previous owners shortly before we bought it ~1.5 yrs ago. Since then it's only had the best in loving care Hopefully all will be well when I get it apart, but I guess we'll see...
Thanks for the advice

Yeah... The Toyota gaskets will always suit Toyota motors better... From memory, retail is around $360 for the full kit with all the engine gaskets, seals inside the cyl head and even exhaust gaskets ...
So yeah, go for Genuine...

Yeah we really can't decide if we should just drop a new 4age (mb 20v) in there which is less hassle -- more expensive, but easire
OR
take the existing one apart, stuff around and replace the gasket -- cheaper
If we were to do the gasket, should we send the block off to get tested or just the head?
Darn it, I hate decisions!

put a straight edge accross both and have a look first at the least do the head, in most cases the block is ok
