AE86 Steering/Suspenison delima? Wed, 07 July 2004 12:41 Go to next message
Ive had the car for about 2yrs, and this delima has been seen by all the (so called) steering and suspesion expert.

When driving along a smoothish road all is fine, but when i drive over a series of potholes/bumps general bad condition road , i get a weird knocking sound/feel thru the steering wheel, like something is loose/broken, ive been the 4 different shops and they cant find anything. I got a whell balance and alignment, that helped a liitle but the same noise is still there.

Any idea's, has someone dealt with this before.

Have you checked the large nuts that hold the front strut cartridges inside the strut leg? If these are not down tight against the cartridge, then the cartridge can move around inside the strut making a knocking noise.... Its quite loud, you'd definately notice it. A reputable steering specialist once left mine loose after doing some work on my suspension, took a while to figure out what was wrong.

Cheers
Phil

thanks for the reply Phil, i can only assume that when i say "check everything" these so called professionals did just that "check everything"

I intend on jacking the car up on the weekend and giving "everything i can think of" a look at.

I intend on checking,

struts: rubbers/nuts&bolts
coil/spring: make sure its seating/seated properly.
control arms: rubbers/cracks

If anybody else can suggested area's i should check please do?

Cheers Phil

Steve

Check out the uni joint on the top of the rack - I had a similiar problem with mine, I always presumed it was just wear in the rack, until I decided to check it out one day.

Rex has this problem also, quite horrific really. He's narrowed it down to a set of fucked dampers and 3mm or so freeplay in each rack-end.

Probably not applicable in your case but...

I had a knock/shudder develop in the steering on my '86. Turned out the steering wheel was just ever so slightly loose on the boss. When I went to put the new Boss Kit on I discovered it. Up to that point I thought the rack might be on it's way out.

Cheers,
Dan

I had a good look at it today and everything appears intake except the uni joint you refer too, the drivers side has roughly 3-4mm play in it, i can only assume this is wear the noise is coming from.

Thanx for all the reply's, i will check all of your suggestions and post my findings.

Sure, either buy an aftermarket branded one, or do what I did, take the joint in one hand, walk up to a big shelf full of junk in your shed, scrounge around, and smile when you have one that matches. From memory mine was from a 50K old AE92 half cut

hmm seems like every1 has this problem....does it happen when u slowly reverse off a curb/driveway if u dont firmly hold the wheel?
If so then more then likely it will be the uni joint, both my cars have the problem so i cant even swap the uni between em Neutral

i think it might be caused by rubbing curbs at speed Smile

Ive never changed anything, all original except fo the springs, 30mm lower and a whiteline front sway bar, I definatly know there is a noise coming from the uni joint at the end of the rack, i might just buy from toyota, unless someone has some they would like to sell. I need my car for work everyday so its a little hard to take it of the road and search for parts.

MRSHIN you say look for aftermarket ones but i wouldnt know where to start looking, can you suggest someone.

Cheers
