I wouldn't bother getting the stock turbo rebuilt, I did that with mine and $750 later I still had the same shitty little turbo. I'd try and replace it with a ct26 from a supra, they bolt up pretty much the same (I think you need a little mounting plate made up but it's a pretty simple job) and it flows a hell of a lot more, certainly on the exhaust side of things, though you'll also need to get a new dump pipe made up (also pretty simple), though you can often buy them with them attached. You can get them in decent condition for around $400. When I had the exact same thing happen to me a few years ago I unfortunatly got a ct26 off an mr2 and it's a fair bit different to the supra one (it was stuffed anyway so I sent it back) so I got a hold of a Garrett T3, this required a fair bit more pain to put on than the ct26 though they are comparable in their operation. The swap gave my 3t-gt a fair bit more kick, particularly up in the higher revs and was smoother too, it certainly didn't take any longer to spool up than the old ct20 so you've really got nothing to lose in the swap. The ct26 also has a hell of a lot more scope in terms of future modification to tailor it to your engine and any other mods you do (changing turbine and compressor wheels and the like). If you needed just a short term fix someone on the forum might have a spare ct20 lying around that you caould pick up for $150-200 that would keep you going for a while while you plan a better upgrade (i've often seen them posted). Good luck, Chris.

The Supra CT26 doesn't need a mounting plate, apparently you just slot the holes on the turbo a few mm for it to bolt onto the standard manifold. May also pay to to give the manifold a quick porting job to improve flow.
(read this in a previous post so don't blame me if it is wrong, all sounds very feasible)

I'd probably suggest you fit a standard CT26, try it out, see how you like the feel of it. If you think you could live with a bit more lag, then get it upgraded, if not just get it rebuilt (if it needs it)
