AE82 4AGE Air Con advice needed
|

My twinky does not have air conditioning and as the weather is starting to warm up a bit I want to have a crack at installing air conditioning myself.
Couple of questions:
What parts do I need?
How much do I need to spend on the parts roughly?
How much work would it be and would I need any specialised type tools/equipment?
Any other advice on air con appreciated.
Thanks
Toby

Head down to your local aircon place and ask them a few questions. I looked into it my self at one time, and while its poiisble, it could be annoying. For example, if you get one rubber component in the system that doesnt like the gas, it could cost a lot to repair the aircon system. The differences betweem R12 and Rwhatever it is these days are considerable.
Mechanicly, it isnt too hard to install the components (except mabey getting at the parts under the dash!!) and its worth the money to get a professional to look over it before filling it with gas. You will need to get someone who has the right equipment and qualification to regas the system.
Most parts are probably available from a jap wreckers, so you may be able to get a complete setup form there.
I have no idea on the cost tho...
Craig.

I spoke to someone who reckoned it would cost around $1500-1800 to get it professionally done!!
I was also told that it would be very very difficult job to do myself.
Might just have to get hot in summer I think

Rollaboy: In theory yes, thats all you would need to do.
In reality, you would need to give the system a check over, and make sure the absence of a compressor hasnt let any unwanted bits get into the system, and that the rest of the system hasnt degarded too much. You might well need a new condensor (or valve thingy). They usualy need replaced if the system has been idle for a long time any way.
Also, you would have to get a compressor that is compatable with the same gas the the rest of the system used to run, other wise you may need to rebuild the compresor or the rest of the system to be compatable. The older R12 and the new R(whatever it is) will destroy any gaskets that are ment for the other type of gas.

A little off topic but will help.
Myself and a friend of mine both have AE86s and we have converted his car to air-con and are in the process of doing mine. Sourced all the parts (condensor, evaporator, compressor, hoses etc) from a wreck for less than 500 bucks.
Put is all in ourselves, not hard at all! And then off to pro to get pressure tested and regassed as well as the idler set. To re-gas the thing they change the valves to the new gas standard etc. All for just over 200 bucks.
Sweet.

When warm it idles at about 2500rpm and when hot about 1000-1100.
At a 100 km/h i forget so i'll have a look today.
Whats your timing at?? Mines at 35degs which i think is way to much. I think its making my car want to stall.
Youngy: Thanks heaps I'll prob get a compressor now and go get it regased.

100km/h in 5th @ 3300-3400
80km/h in 5th @ 2600-2700
80km/h in 4th @ 3200-3300
60km/h in 2nd @ 4600-4800
Is it easy to change the timing???

Dunno what my timing is nor do I know how to change it but from what I gather its easy to do.
Those speeds and rpm sound pretty close to mine.
