Hi. Im interested in buyin a car. heres the link of it below:
http://www.carsales.com.au/pls/carsales/&#...r ch_distance=25
the person said he can bring the car down to $7000 due to cracked windsheild which i can replace for $240. He said there is absolutley nothing wrong with it. And there is no service book so it is unknown whether he has done a service every 10,000km. He says he serviced the car twice since he bought it (11 months ago). And before that its been serviced often as the person he bought it of works for toyota and does it cheaper (the servicing). Problem is im in canberra and its like a 4 hour drive away from the location in NSW. And i cant get an NRMA service check. Im goin tommorow to check it. Is there anything ishould do to see if the car is worth buying? like check anything in the engine and anything else? coz im not very good with cars. Thanks

okay well that car has just little less km's on it then mine.
take someone thats seen a few celicas of that model.
things that you learn to check are:
- gearbox ~many 5th gear in these gearbox's will pop out, this
is a sign the gear box is on the way out.
- take it for a drive, test the steering, full lock left and
right
- test drive it, i found some are shit listern of little
rattles and things, you will more then likely hear a loose
fan sound between gears, get it checked out by RACQ or the
equivilent.
good luck with the purchase, i hope you get the car, if you do get this one you may need to check that the proper mantainence has been done, ie. 100Km's service, seals and timming belt i replaced mine out of fear i hadn't been done, also replace the cam seal, and other seals while i was at it.

why would you replace a timing belt on this engine "out of fear"? Bit melodramtic. Don't try and scare people.
The 5SFE, 3SGE and 3SGTE are all non-interference motors, meaning a snapped timing belt won't do any harm to the engine. It will just stop.

Timing belts on a 5S-FE and 3S-GE will hold on alot longer than 100,000k too, but having said that - there's no reason not to replace them because it saves the dramas of having the car break down in the middle of nowhere
