3TGTEU Opinions

Hello all,
First of all I would like to say what a great forum this is great info and a lot of great cars
I have been trolling through the web in search of information on the 3tgteu motor, as this is the engine currently in a car i am looking at buying.
Some unanswered questions I have though are:
Reliability? They are getting on a bit now? I know they are imported so how do you owners find the issue of parts etc?
The car i am looking at is running the standard ct20 turbo but has an intercooler and is running 10psi. Stock boost is 7.3psi correct? Forgive my newbie-ness but is this a lot of boost for an engine that is relatively stock? I would rather be on the side of caution and have reliability than tons of power for the sacrifice of reliability.
Also, the car it is in (mk1 escort) is running standard diff still can i expect to be constantly blowing diffs even just in daily driving or will the mighty mk1 diff be ok as long as it is not raced and used for burnouts etc?
Any information and opinions you might have is welcome as I really don't want to make any rash decisions and buy a car just on impulse. Thankyou
Ben

Hi Ben,
To answer your question on reliability, it depends on a number of factors... 10psi is farily safe for a 3T-GTE provided that it is set-up properly. The intercooler is certainly a good thing, anything that can keep intake temps down is going to be good for reliability, provided it is a decent intercooler.
The standard 3T-GTE internals can handle a fair amount of power, but tuning is the other big consideration, the 3T-GTE isn't as forgiving as some engines if you get it wrong... but if you get it right can be a great engine.
I have done a few 3T-GTE conversions each of them running more than 10 psi on standard internals... all of them very reliable.
The best example on Toymods of a consistent performing 3T-GTE with the right tweaks is Jason's (YelloRolla) 194rwkw corolla.
Send him a PM if you wanted to find out further details on what he has done to achieve this... or he may even reply to this thread.
As for the MK1 diff, I'd be treating it with some care, I have seen many an escort diff go bang, even without big power.
I guess my decision would be based on how much are you looking at paying for this? At the right price it could be a bit of fun & perhaps a bargain??
Hope this helps,
3T-GTE

Thanks 3T-GTE
I know what you mean about the escort diff... i flinched when i heard that it was still using stock diff. However i wouldn't intend to race or be constantly dragging so i guess if i am gentle it might last a while until $ permit a capri lsd or other.
Would 10psi on standard ct20 turbo with just an intercooler be and some tuning be about 100kw? Thats all im really after, as it will be my first turbo car anyway. Jasons corolla sounds mad though. Must be a fair bit of $$ for that one, sounds great
The car has a fairly new paint job and the body is immaculate save 1 small rust spot >_<
Has 5 speed supra box, retrimmed scheel seats and interior, hood lining etc, 3" exhaust, and mk2 2.0L brakes etc. Asking price is $7500, but as always id say there is room for negotiation.

Hi Ben,
Sounds like a neat & fun little machine... good to hear that it has a decent gearbox & they have upgraded the brakes too. Is it legally approved with the 3T-GTE?
I reckon you should be able to get that out of your engine with thre right set-up & tuning.
The last "standard" 3T-GTE I dynoed was putting out 135kw at the wheels (or around 195kw at the flywheel). It ran a custom water-to-air intercooler, 3" exhaust & around 13psi boost.
See if you can't knock the price down a bit so you can have a few extra $$ to spend on sorting it out some more.
Post some pics if you can, I'd be interesed to see how it fits & what sort of a job they have done.
Cheers,
3T-GTE.

Hey 3T-GTE,
Yep suprisingly the owner has certs for everything, which is great.
I don't yet know a great deal about the car as it is some 400k's away from me and pictures are hopefully on the way. Will post some when i get them, it sounds great but you can never tell until you see it in the flesh so to speak. I will definately be trying to negotiate - that standard mk2 diff has some cause for a price reduction i'd say... i got a rough quote of $2000 to get a falcon diff or 2.8 capri lsd put in.. ouch! haha.
One thing i am curious about is the availability of parts for the motor? Are the jap wreckers the only place to go? Or does the 3tgte share some components with the other 3t motor? 3tc i think?
