I painted my engine bay today and went to spray the clear but there were no instructions. Do i just spray clear or do i mix with thinners and what ratio??? do i add paint and how much?? Will the clear give me a smoother finish or is it not nessecary? How long can i wait after painting before i spray the clear?

MATE!!!!! you gotta spray the clear while the paint is still wet (basically straight after you paint) so it can stick together and give the shine...
- you need clear, thinners and hardener
- with the hardener there are different types, high solid, medium solid and low solid depending on the finish you want
- further to that there are 2 ratios, 2:1 OR 4:1... standard is 4:1 (but it depends on the hardener you bought), ie, 1000ml clear: 250ml hardener: small cap full of thinners (just to make spraying easy)
- when spraying the clear mix you should do bout 2-3 coats depending on how it is sprayed, ie, 2 nice/full coats OR 1 dust coat and 2 nice coats (leave bout 5-10min between coats)
NOW since you have already done the paint this is what you can do... allow the paint to dry (i would leave it for 3-4 days for perfect result), rub it back with either 1200 or 2000, wax and grease it and then do the clear
KEEP IN MIND I AM TALKING BOUT 2PAC, IF YOU HAVE DONE ACRYLIC THEN YOU MAY NEED TO RUB IT BACK WITH 800 IT JUST DEPENDS ON HOW SMOOTH THE PAINT JOB CAME OUT

Do i really need to clear the engine bay??? I was told no hardener was needed for acrylic as thats what ive used. Ill let it dry till about wednesday and then try spraying some clear once i find the mixtures. Also acrylic instructions say fully dry in 24 hours. Is that right?

you dont need clear unless you want shine/mirror effect...
its an engine bay so not really need to clear, if i do my engine bay colour i will not be clearing cause there is no use, all that shine and effort and what not so it can get dirty, oily, scratched have more mods done, etc etc
im leaveing my bay either how it is (orange) or going black and not colour but thats just me, im always the odd one out when it comes to cars
all clear needs hardener otherwise it wont dry properly
the clear is fully dry in 24hrs cause it is only a couple coats but paint is longer cause there are more coats. now technically all paint will be dry in a couple days for sure BUT the longer you leave it before doing anything the harder and stronger it gets cause there is more time to dry
they say 24-48hrs cause after that you can start fitting up stuff or doing other work and it wont smudge the paint but underneath it will still be wet... probably a bad example but think of it like custard, the surface is dry but remove the surface and its still wet underneath, the longer you leave the custard the thicker the dry parts get (make any sense?)

hi ben, i think with clear acrylic (fade-e: that's what he's using) you mix with thinners as per paint - if you only want a thin/quick drying coat, then use more thinners.
in the engine bay, the clear will simply protect the paint from being easily scratched & chipped from minor knocks &* bumps. It will also provide a little extra protection from the rapid aeging that engines bays inflict on paint (heat, hig humidity, chemicals, oils, etc).
If you're not painting onto touch dry paint, i'd let it cure for a few days then spray the clear.
try to find manufacturers web site, they might have instructions. when in doubt, try google.
btw: i can't come over tonite (sunday) - things to do...

what ^^^^^^^^^^^^ said but im not really sure though, i know for scratches and stones and stuff you can put some anti chip in the paint itself when spraying for that but not really sure if clear does that too... iv always known it for shine/ageing

The thinning of acrylic clear coats is a high percentage.
The last one i used was 100-150% thinners, so thats equal mix of paint and thinners or 1.5 times the mix with thinners.
Always ask for a data sheet if its a product you are not used to using.
The shine is one reason for using the clear coat but its also to prevent small chips from showing up the undercoats, different colours or metal. Of course heavy chips will go straight through. It also allows you to buff and shine away without fear of wearing through your applied colour.
You won't need to worry about the drying times listed above as they are more for two pack as mentioned in the posts. Gentle sand and spray away!
Personally because my car is not for show i wouldn't do the engine bay in clear coat.

they dont mix paint with colour, i have never seen that... but they do put pearl in clear or pearl in paint depending on the effect you want
that reminds me of me first TA22... she was red with a lilac pearl... we mixed the pearl in the paint and the colour was AWSOME just FUCKING AWSOME (sorry bout the language but deserved it)
under the light she would change colours a thousnad times, we ended up counting over 15 dfferent colours depending on time of day, lighting and angle you were looking at... NOW SHE WAS A HEAD TURNER i had people at lights, on the street and even in petrol stations pull me over to ask what i did THEN i wrote it off

........................... just another note for you people100... when you look at a car either new or old have you ever seen the bay cleared and shiny? NO cause of what i said earlier, dirt, etc, etc
also now they do it black on new cars or a dark colour depending on car colour for that same reason... at the end of the day the bay is gonna get stuffed up by everything and you cant get in there to clean and wax it... you use degreeser and that eats paint anyway... i would clear the bottom of the bonnet cause it will be done all together but thats it
