3sge intake manifold modification for rwd application Sun, 11 July 2004 13:51 Go to next message
I have a gen 2 3sge from jap mr2 i am installing into my ta22.

In regards to the intake manifold..

I originally planned to simply have the throttle body moved to the "front" of the plenum, and retain the factory airsplitter/butterfly doobies (motor is to be left stock as possible at this point), but my tapemeasure tells me this is impossible.

what are my options here? bearing in mind that stock computer is to be retained.

what exactly do the airsplitter butterfly doobies do?(something similar to TVIS i assume?)

i hope people can understand my very technical description of parts.

any help much appreciated.
Tom

First off, I have the same motor (JDM Gen2 3SGE) that I'm also converting to RWD, so just that mere fact allows me to pontificate at length about my experience with this situation, despite the fact that I've never had the thing running yet...

ok, anyway, now that we've got the groundwork set out for my advice... I took the manifold off my motor, and unlike the turbo motors with twin runners and TVIS shit at the port, the N/A motors don't have the TVIS, and they have a single non-divided runner per cylinder. What would happen if you canned the crazy-action part of the manifold? Probably not a devastating change of operation in any way...

I've seen pictures of the Fraser cars with inverted pleinums - looks like the stock manifold was cut on a bandsaw, then had the runners flipped over and rotated 180 degrees, and a bit of fudge-work in the middle and a new flange...

thanks for the reply.
yeah i was thinking of leaving it off completly and mounting the plenum off short runners, level with the ports.

can anyone verify that these butterflys are non-essential for operation with the stock computer?

They are TVIS as per any similar toyota setup. In ditching them you lose very little driveability, especially if anything else (turbo, exhaust etc) is modded and it doesn't effect the computer at all. You can't just ditch it though as the manifold won't bolt straight to the head. You need to gut it and weld up the shaft holes.

On my RWD conversion i used the bottom half of the manifold and made my own plenum....email me direct if you want pics
