External resistor heating up???

Ive come across a problem when i have my engine running, my external resistor on my coil from my 74 ta22 heats up enough to cook eggs on, at one stage it started smoking, but has only done it once, my car still starts up and drives, its just that resistor that heats up really fast and really hot. I have replaced the resistor with a new one and still does heat up very quick. Iam gettin a pro to look at it soon but any ideas that can help us would be sweet.
cheers.

well....
the ballast resistor is what.. about 1 or 2 ohms... and has about 5 amps running through it?
thats about 60W of power = a 60watt heater like a medium sized soldering iron
it's been a while since i ran one, but they do get warm..

thanks stewart, your probably right, but how would you explain the smoke comming from the resistor and a burning smell rising from it? is it normal for it to do that when they are brand new?

hmm, that does sound a little warm....i would expect a smell initially... but continuous smoke is prolly not good..
