In melbourne you might be lucky to find a 4-age with a good body, but don't expect to much
you could buy a very clean 4ac and have some money to play around with... prices in melbourne are very high atm for ae86's...
if you went interstate, you would find a 4age with some decent work i bet...

I reckon you could get a VERY nice ke70/ae70 for that much but you wouldn't have the "takumi style" that bumps up the price

yeh your best bet would be to buy one from sydney or brisbane, if you have any mates in sydney get them to keep a lookout and then dash up if they find one for sale and it seems like a good deal for what you want to spend. i spose 6k would get you a fairly straight Sprinter, 4age, stock interior, probly a set of wheels, system, maybe front brake upgrade or lsd, or if your lucky both lol. 
there was one for sale in Canberra i think, someone posted in cars for sale and wanted late last week, it had quite a few mods and bits and pieces too, seemed like a bargain for $5.5k.it should be on one of the first few pages, no one had looked at the thread either, whether the guy who was actually selling it had gotten heaps of interest im not sure about.

does it have to be an AE86? i know its FWD but i would let my GZE powered AE82 go for just over $6K with heaps of mods.

have u seen that yellow drift sprinter thats always in the hot/fast 4's, they have pics of him in the various drift comps around the country, and he wins them all.
he has spent a whopping $4.2K on it, and he beat about 8 other purpose built drift AE86's and about 15 purpose built S13's at the recent drift day at willowbank

A few break down on costs of mine
Puchase - $1800
4age converstion (including engine) $1000
Fix all rust - $2500
Haven't done much suspension work yet as it already came with lowered springs etc. Plus I personally don't think AE86's need much work to get them handling well. Just some stiffer springs and good quality shocks.
I reckon allow another $2000 for suspension (springs, shocks, new bushes).

You could build a GZE AE71 with lsd etc for that price.
Unless ya lucky you pay extra for an ae86 cos of its name. I was lucky enough to find an immac sprinter in ballarat for 800$, unfortunetly by the time i found the right street (mate told me wrong street) it was sold!.
