Gear Box for 1G-GE in RA28

What gear box can you get away with having for a 1G-GE, does it have to be the supra W58 or can I leave my trusty standard RA28 box in place??
I have read all the tech articles but are there any other words of wisdom for doing the conversion?

What box does the RA28 have? Can you find a 1G bellhousing for it?

Yeah i would love to hear a good answer to this one because i may be attempting this conversion early next year. if a good efi 18Rg doesnt come into my life by then
Did you have trouble sourcing your 1g and around what sort of price did front up for it?
sorry to be so intrusive i have jst never encountered a N/A 1g in a celica and would love mine to be like it.
I have heard the w50 will hold if you have the correct bellhousing/adaptor plate but i would really go the supra option in the long run for strength/safety, but i am no expert on gearboxes

The prices are
$1000 'cash' (important factor) for Engine, complete.
$500 for gear box.
I was hoping to avoid having to cut the car to fit the supra gear box/stick but I think it is going to have to be done.
I don't know as to install price as yet, need to call around, or find some competent friends quickly.
you can get 1G-GTEs in adelaide for $1500, or $2000 with big blitz turbos, but I am not really a turbo kind of guy. I also don't want to upgrade the diff and brakes quite yet.

W50's aren't available with G series bellhousings, and you can't use a bellhousing from a later model W series box. I'm afraid your only practical option is to buy a W58 from a 1G.

1G-GE's came with W55's and the GTE's came with W58's

W55-W58's will fit on a 1G engine with the right bellhousing. The bellhousing you got with the GE should fit any of these. W50 or T50's won't fit unless you get a housing made which is stupid. W58 gearboxes have 3 different stick positions. I have the one from a 1GGTE (not sure what car) and it has the back position, this is further back than the original w%) gearbox sits and you have make the hole a bit bigger, also, any of these boxes will need a slightly modified gearbox crossmember. The far back position is the best for the RA28 I think as it sits nicely next to the seat.
The W57 from RA60 celicas is a long way forward and is almost out of reach with the seat right back.
Maybe one of the other W58 stick positions would fit in the original hole?

Craig,
I threw out the piece of paper but I think the boys at Japanese motorsport (08) 8260 6919 were the ones with the GTE with Blitz turbos, that apparently was pretty much the complete setup to go into the car for $2000, but I haven't seen the engine so I don't know the condition.
And Tim, as for the W57 stick being unreachable with the seat back- not really going to be much of a problem, hence the name midge.
Any other hints for the conversion not already spoken about in the tech articles?
Thanks gentlemen
Andrew

But don't forget you're arms will be short too!!
Do you have a gearbox that will bolt up to a g engine?? If no thten you don't really have much of a choice but to ring around and see what wreckers have got! You'll pay through the nose though.
The gearbox crossmember fit best when you have a stock auto transmission crossmember. then you just have to weld some tabs on with holes in them.
Be careful when choosing thermofan and intercooler plumbing, it gets damn tight!! I managed to get all the steel plates on the front bumper back on but the grill is about 1/2 an inch further forward. I believe Dylo got everything to fit perfect.
Also, the fuel system is a bitch, ended costing me about 600 bucks.
Good luck!!
Tim.

The three stick positions are all interchangable AFAIK. So just pick whichever one you want and bolt it in.

True, but it's not as easy as you might think. I'm in the middle of swapping shifters in a W58 right now.

good luck,
I just got quoted $3000 to fit a 1G-GE, let alone a 1G-GTE.
The RA28 is worth it though, for the style, the class, the individuality and the bootspace to sleep in when you've had too much to drink to drive home .
