Wheels Jan 1974 Magazine Celica Test/Review Mon, 12 July 2004 12:34 Go to next message
Hi,

nyuk nyuk nyuk.... Cool

I've just won a bid on eBay for the January 1974 Wheels magazine.

I got it 'cos it has the RA25 GT2000 test in it. I just had to get it. Hey, this isn't any old RA25 - this is actually my car - this was before it was put into storage before being released to the public. Me, being a public sorta guy, then bought the car.

It'll no doubt have a TA22 Celica add or something in there also. Great stuff!

I'll scan it when I get it in case anyone wants a squiz.

woo-hoo, I'm so stoked!!!! Very Happy

Absolutely! I can email it to people (but it maybe really big) or try and sweet-talk the Toymods webmaster to get it put onto this site. I'll bring some chocolate brownies to the next meeting and try and woo them over. Smile

Nah, I live in Canberra... Smile

Although I saw your car at the Dyno Day. Assuming that gold RA25 was your one.

Nope. The gold one is an RA28, and someone elses car. I checked it out also - that's a nice car. I dunno who owns it, but they should be pretty proud. Did well on the dyno also, IIRC.

Mine was parked a few cars in front of it. Mine is a rusty-red colour. I guess that unless you know your old Celicas you wouldn't notice that much difference - but there is.

Mate, that is soooo cool! I would definitely have been bidding on it too if I was in the same boat as you. Nod

Hi,

The magazine turned up today.

Fucking-A good stuff! It confirms the vehicle history.

Ken Hougham, director of AMI (at the time) brought in a one-off RA25. Number plate was KRH-555, which is written on the tool kit on the car. Ken's mate, Laurie Stewart, who runs Stewart Toyota in Australia, got the car and sold it. The car still has the "Stewart Toyota Car Dealer of the Year" sticker on the rear window. That completes my search and will go with the log books and service records I have for this car.

Hey, inside front cover is a big full page colour add of the TA22 Celica. Brilliant stuff.

I'll bring the mag to the nmeeting tonight in case anyone wants a squiz, then I'm scanning it.

there are no plans to import the vehicle... the introduction of a low volume, low profit, high performance car into the Toyota range could react unfavourably against their bread & butter lines

Hi,

The RA25 is the predecessor of the RA28 liftback. It was a Japanese Domestic Market model and not exported.

It came in three flavours, LT, ST and GT as per most early Celica models.

It's based on the shorter TA22 chassis, with the short nose but with the non-sloped clear parking lights (as per RA28) and the RA28 liftback shape. The RA25 models had the R-series engine and there was a similar looking model called the TA27 which had the T-series engines. These models also had 5 rear tails lights per side, as opposed to three lights on the later RA28 series.

The RA25 GT2000 model had the 18RG engine, P51 5-speed box, F-series LSD, electric windows, overhead warning lights, split tail shaft, air con and a non-bulged bonnet (as per TA22) with triple fluted air scoops on each side.

I saw this article in an old Wheels that I cam across in my travels. Should have grabbed it when I had the chance Sad

Did the RA25 (at least in GT spec) have the same brakes as the RA28?

Did the later liftback Jap sec RA28 (or equivalent) still have the same 5 way slotted tail lights as the RA25 or did it change to a similar 3 way setup like the OZ spec RA28?

Modern Motor had a similar article on a 1974/5 (purple!) Corona 2000 GT brought in as an "evaluation vehicle" for one of the AMI managers in Melbourne. I have this article if anyone is interested. Does anyone know if this car is still around?

There was yet another article on a RX22 Mk2 Corona GSS in Wheels in 1972. Again it was brought in for an AMI manager. A guy I know has a GSS which he is (VERY) slowly restoring, and it is highly likely that it is the actual same car.

Finally I have a Wheels article on a red RT75 shovelnose (yay!) Corona Mk2 brought in during 1970. I believe this car now is probably located in either Melbourne or South Australia.
