Subject : w50s and w40s
i have a w50 that was from a 18r, i used it in a corona mark 2 (4m), and the front bearings shit itself, so we replaced them with bearings from a w40(4m).
you say on your website that the w50's that were for 6 cylinder's had a needle roller bearing in the cluster shaft, which bearing do you mean? the one you can see before you remove the cluster shaft or the one after you remove it? both boxes had the same bearings, ball bearing in front, needle bearing behind. let me know about this please, as i'm gonna put it back in soon. thanks, joe.

As far as I can remember, the roller bearing on mine was when I took off the input shaft.
It was on the front end of the output shaft where it meets the input shaft.
I think that was correct.
But hey, I'm remembering something I did almost 2 years ago, and it was something I didnt really pay attention to.

hey guy's that was me that sent the email, i didn't know cruzsida was the recipient. i guess you haven't actually seen the boxes you're talking about then. i'm pretty sure they died through lack of oil, the front bearing almost melted, i cooked the oil seal, and the bearing behind the cluster shaft had been red hot, it was discoloured. i replaced both with bearings out of a w40, exactly the same bearings.

Ed was the recipient, not me.
And I have pulled these boxes apart before, but it was 2 years ago, and I can't remember it.
Either way, I had both a 6cyl W50 and a 4cyl W40 behind my 6mge.
And they both held up fine.
The bearing in the W40 was still the original 4cyl ball bearing style, and it survived.
It only did 7000ish km's before I pulled her in favour of a W57, but it was a VERY harsh 7000km, most shifts were redline, high rpm dumps, almost sidesteping clutch etc etc.
Very strong little box that only cost $40!!
