Hi,
A UK spec' 1979 TA40 was fitted with 165-13 tyres.
They do not have a profile figure in the tyre size.
Found this on the subject though....
" The profile of a "standard" tyre is 80, (i.e. 80% of the width of the tread). Some tyres, especially those fitted on older vehicles, don't display the profile number. So you might have a tyre showing "165x14". If the tyre profile number is not printed on the tyre sidewall, you can assume it is a standard tyre, with the profile number 80. "
Pumping these figures into a tyre comparator such as:
http://www.tyresave.co.uk/tyresize.html
and you end up with a difference of +2.36%
This will have an effect on your overall gearing and speedo calibration - probabably not enough to worry about though.
The extra width may effect other factors of the suspension dynamics though
If you want to work out the tyre size/rear axle ratio/speed calculations etc have a look here:
http://www.britishv8.org/swaps/design.htm
Quite a useful xl spreadsheet
Cheers

I should say that base models were fitted with this size tyre, but am sure some of 2 liter models were fitted with 14" wheels.

a 165SR13 tyre, is a 165/82/13 in modern terms. older toyotas usually had a tyre placard in the glovebox, does yours?
there is a decent tyre calculator on my garage page http://www.superjamie.net/garage/
if that is the correct size for your car, and i suspect it would be, then a 165/60/14 is a drive reduction of 8%. when you're doing 100km/h on your speedo, you're really doing 92km/h. when you're doing 108km/h on the speedo, you're really doing 100km/h. this also makes your rolling diameter less, so your car will launch quicker but have a lower top speed
185/75/13s are a 1.1% increase, i would think that 185/70/13s would be better, at 1.9% reduction
you can also work out the height of your wheel from these numbers (sidewall is a percentage of width, eg: a 200/50/13 tyre has a 100mm sidewall). obviously, two sidewalls plus the diameter of the wheel - and note that if you reduce your wheel height by more than 15mm from stock, then you can be defected (wheel and tyre changes outside this can be engineered, sometimes)

Yep your original tyre size would have been 165R14 which as Super Jamie points out equates to a 165/82/14 tyre. This figure gives a diamter of 626.2mm, and as such your cureent tyres are too small. Ideally you want to find some 195/70/14's or 205/65/14's for your car to keep your speedo accurate.
your current tyres being 185/75/13 are more suited to cars that originally had 165R13 tyres, like TA22's.

look in the door jam, driver's side and there should be a sticker with info on tire pressures and tire size for the car.

Only thing in the doorjamb was the 'compliance' tyreplate which was made with one of those pressure-labellers and referred to exactly what was on the car, but the wheels are corolla wheels not celica wheels and as a result I sincerely doubt that the information is accurate.
Also whilst driving on the road I felt a little odd at the speedlimit though my experience is a touch limited and it may just be driving position.
Thanks for all your help guys.
On a sidenote, anyone interested in a set of 13" steels and tyres? I'll include wheelcovers! lol

I know TA40s and TA45s had 13 inch wheels standard, so I'd suspect that a TA46 also came with 13 inch wheels.
