7M-GE Splutters...No balls. Tue, 10 September 2002 02:37 Go to next message
Ok, the cressies having issues...

The engine splutters and when pushed/floored is essentially lifeless...without being in gear...and thats if it doesn't stall.
The thing is so rough it's not driveable, it really has trouble when cold and when it gets warm it idles alright but has absolutely no power...1st gear is a huge ask of it.
It can run smooth when warm on idle, so i dont think anything of ignition...
I have a feeling it's a fuel pump...
No steam/smoke...Can't be the head gasket, that was replaced quite recently.
Does anyone have any ideas???

If it is the fuel pump...Where's it located in these cars and how hard is it to replace...

Oh and, the 1J is on the way, I just need this to hold out til it gets here...Thinking about upgrading the fuel pump to bigger one for the 1J, if i do this in anticipation of the new engine will it have problems with the current engine??? rather than have to do two fuel pump swaps if thats what is wrong.

All help is greatly appreciated...thanks in advance...

If it was me I'd be looking for a leak in the inlet system, anywhere between the airflow meter and the inlet runners.

Failing that, I'd be checking the airflow meter itself for correct operation.

It's not a turbo...
The airflow meter clicks a bit though... I will have a look at it, un plugging it has little or no effect...btw.

thanks for the ideas...keep em coming.

Hi,
on the www.chpromotion.com/toyota/ there is 7M engine manual in pdf form. Download EFI sections (15 minutes at last) and in this section is very good troubleshooting guide for what you described.

Greg

sounds like air flow meter to me.

seems to have the same running problems as my 18R-GEU has when the AFM lead falls off.

Air leaks can cause problems like this. The fact that you don't have a turbo doesn't make much difference. However it does sound more like a problem with the airflow meter - check all the wiring for damage and of course make sure it's plugged in properly. If possible you should borrow a known working AFM from another car and see if that makes any difference.

Ok, now...
Have made a quick inspection of the AFM, if it is unplugged, nothing really changes in the behaviour, other than a quick "Ecu" like, adjustment, and then spluttering...
The gate inside seems to be opening and closing correctly, not too much...
If it's unplugged will the ecu try to re tune without it?

Anyone know how much one of these costs?

Anyone in the canberra region got one I can use to test?.

Thanks guys for the help!.

Well, back on the road, again, and smooth as silk again...
Cylinder 4 was waterlogged, thanks to a mate, and that chpromotions web site, its all good now...After having to physically suck the "juice" (oil, water, degreaser)...from the head of the engine. Using a 3m hose...small one that fits...
It actually used to happen consistently after getting my car back from the mechanics. And they would pull the dizzy apart trying to fix the problem...I should have seen it earlier...
I just wanna know, has anyone else had these problems...a misfire here and there after being washed etc.?

PS...The 1J arrives soon!!! Smile

When you say the cylinder is waterlogged, do you mean the spark plug tube on top of the engine or do you mean the cylinder itself? The former is no big deal, the latter means you probably have the dreaded BHG...

Yep, happens all the time. Especially if parked facing down hill in the rain. Water runs off the windscreen and straight into the spark plug valley. Cylinders 5 and 6 get swimming lessons Smile

Sorry Norbie!...I meant the chamber above it...
I've already dealt with the BHG once...hopefully never again.. The 1j is on the way..
Steve...Does it ever cause you issues?

Not really,

I have a little syphon made up, suck it dry and apply WD40. fine till the next time I forget, and get carried away cleaning the engine. Rolling Eyes
