you CAN get the 88250 model pistons (8.7:1 pistons) from Toyota ex-japan. But they are almost the cost of a forged set (ie $600+)
Head - i dunno, chain guides?

Cheers. any info i can get is greatly appriecated. I am modifing the engine to suit a turbo, so i was thinking of forged pistons anyway. new chain guides etc were on the to do list while i still have it apart.

if your on a bit of a budget id suggest using standard 18rc pistons. Thats what im doing and should lower to around 8.2:1 compression

just get forged {obviously oversized} 18RC pistons, its between 8.0 and 8.2

Can standard 18rc pistons be used? i thought of that and looked into it, and the 18rg pistons have grooves machined in the top for the valves. the 18rc pistons do not. if i could that woud be a much eaiser way to go until i have the moeny for forged.

I'd be very surprised if 18R-C pistons will work in an 18R-G without problems. You're right, the 18R-G pistons are flycut to clear the valves, but 18R-C pistons probably aren't flycut, and even if they are the grooves will be in the wrong place!

i dont see why rc pistons wouldnt work they are flat top no dome and they wont hit when comparing them with rg pistons the flycuts end higher than the position of the block (which rc pistons are level with at TDC)
hope that made sense

the RG pistons are flat top as well and still have the flycuts on the piston. dome top pistons are aftermarket. well that is the case with the 18RG that i have anyway. i could be wrong. i am not really willing to use the 18RC pistons to test the theroy. i dont want to have to replace the head. also off topic, does altering the cam duration alter the compression ration of the engine? i know it alters the volumetric efficiency, and i have had mixed feed back about the compression ratio.

Static compression ratio is determined by the bore/stroke and combustion chamber volume only. Cam specs will have a significant effect on dynamic compression though, which is why high-compression pistons are necessary on engines with lots of duration and overlap.

RA_28 has 18RC in his, and im pretty sure they are untouched,
as for comp, RA_28 {alex} said his is somewhere around 8.0-8.2
18RC and 18RG have the same botem end cept for piston tops.
that fella with the 9.2 sec 18RGT corolla over in alexandra hills said the best cams he has found for his turbo application is the std ones

If you search around you can find pistons.
I found a set of brand new 9.7:1 , .5mm OS pistons and bought them for $365 through a toyota dealer, just had to find one who actually gave a shit and was willing to look for them.
I know that there were two sets of these left in Sydney last year.

On the topic of domes, the RG pistons did have raised domes from the factory.
the 9.7:1 pistons have a raised part of approx. 6.7mm, the 8.7:1 pistons have a dome of approx. 4mm and the 8.3:1 pistons have less dome that that.
Note: all rg pistons must be flycut, the cutouts actually extend fractionally below the level of the block, ie. below ehere the flat top of an 18R-C piston is.

There has been talk of a group buy of forged RG pistons. Witzl, do you have any further info on this?

You were right steve m. i phoned all the toyota dealerships in bris, and 1 of them found me a set of 1mm OS available from sydney. all of the others told me not available or no listing. just like u said. find someone who knows the system and cares. he wants 198.15 each retail. so i think i may end up getting forged made anyway unless i can get trade discount from one of my mates. thanx 4 ur help!
