5mge timing

I have got a MKII supra (MA61R)with a 5M-GE engine in it. I have been going through the manual to check the timing but can't find the test connectors it keeps referring to. I think it is an import as I don;t think they came out with this engine in Australia.
Does anyone know whether they could be somewhere else besides just behind the coil or if all MKII's came out with them?
Also, my dash doesn't seem to have a check engine light at all. Does this also indicate that maybe it is an early model which didn't have the later computer?

aus ma61's definately never came with the 5mge
if theres no check connector, then its probably an 82 model
so just set the timing without it.
as to the lack of check engine light, thats just weird.
even aus ma61's have the light.

Yank MA61's didnt have them either
And I dont think the Singapore ones did.
I believe you have the Singapore one Colin?
Manual? No flares? Sunroof? Cruise? Analogue dash?

The licence papers say it's an 83. Is there anywhere on the body where this is given?
It has cruise control, digital dash, sun roof, all electrics etc but it does also have flares.
The body code is MA61R BLMQF if that means anything.
The distributor has a vaccum advance pot on it so it seems to be an older one without the electronic spark advance.
If this is the older EFI system, and the manuals available on the web anywhere or is everything else pretty much the same as the newer version.

Interesting.
What does the ID plate say it came with?
5M-E or 5M-GE ?
It sounds like you have an Aust version with an engine conversion.
Either way, the best way to do timing is with your ear.
Move the dizzy until she sounds like she is running the best.
Then take her for a drive, she could be up on power, or down.
As for the 'bridging' of the test connector that you dont have, removing the vacuum line to the dizzy has the same effect.
What you set it at is determined by what fuel you use.

Bah, A timing light will tell you where its at, but it wont tell you whats best.
You should know that timing for standard fuel and timing for 98 fuel is completely different.
And it doesnt state anywhere what to set your timing at while using 98 fuel.
So just do it by ear and go for a drive until you have full power.

That's all well and good for someone who has a lot of experience doing this, but that may not be the case here. Remember if you get it wrong there is a real potential for permanent engine damage!

The plate definately says 5MGE for the engine.
I have tuned it by feel at the moment. I am just used to some other electronic controllers which sometimes override any adjustments you make by turning the dizzy unless you disable the ESA. Thought this may have been the case with the Supra's.

Colin,
sounds like you have an old 5MGE like mine (no check connector - vac adv on distributor).
I'd recommend using a timing light.
According to the owners manual that came with mine (originally sold to the European market in 1982) -
a) Timing = 8 degrees btdc @1000 rpm max
b) Fuel required = '98 RON(Research Octane Number) or higher'
I set mine for 12 degrees without any problems (only using BP 98 though).
The real check for an old 5MGE is the alternator belts. If it is a pair of conventional belts running the alternator it is an old 5MGE. If it is a multi-v belt running the alternator it is one of the newer ones.
We'll have to drag you along to one of the cruises being organised in Perth in the next few months so we can compare 5MGEs.

I will come along to a meet at some stage, might just have to tidy the car up a bit first though. It's pretty rough at the momment.
The altenator is driven by one of those wide flat multi groved belts, not V belts. I guess the belt is about 20-25 mm wide.
Is this what you mean by a conventional belt?

Then it sounds like you have a late model 5mge engine.
I'm gathering its a 4 wire round TPS, not 3 wire square?
Is the dizzy vacuum operated?
Can you get a few shots of the engine bay?
