SC-14 Questions Tue, 13 July 2004 17:07 Go to next message
I stuck a SC-14 on my 18rg and I lowered my comp to 7.5:1. I am running the largest pulley to max out the blower speed. I am only getting 7lbs of boost. does anyone know what this blower should be outputting? could there be a problem with the blower? I have eliminated all leaks. the blower runs constant cause I had to take off the clutch.
thank you

What is the pulley ratio, and how does it compare to a 1G-GZE?

Remember the boost pressure will be a function of blower RPM and the engine's volumetric efficiency, so there's no guarantee you'll acheive the same boost pressure as a 1G at the same RPM.

if, as you say in your sig, you have 304/304 cams in an SC motor, i dare say you are blowing half the air out thru an open exhaust valve...

what are your cam specs? what rpm will you rev to?

I agree with Stewart.

With those cams you want to be revving it to about 9000RPM (dependent on the rest of the motor) to actually reach the power range of the cams. Considering you say you have changed the pulley on the blower to further increase blower speed, at the said 9000RPM you would probably be exceeding the safe rotational speed for the blower or at very least be working well out of its efficiency range. That is without taking into consideration the life expectancy of the con rods at that RPM Smile

If you have got 304-304 cams then it might be worth trying a pair of 18RG (early model) cams and see if it makes a difference.

sorry I changed to 18rgu cams and I am running a huge intercooler and 2.5" pipe through out the system. I am running flattop forged pistons. had the block decked and head milled to get 7.5:1 comp ratio. stock EFI manifold. Ive tried to advance the intake but it moves the powerband down and I loose a little power moved them back to stock and no boost change but revs nicely. retarded exhaust cam and put the intake to stock and gained a little power. no change in boost levels by adjusting the cams. I blew a hole in my intercooler lastnight.

Blew a hole in your intercooler? Did you move the throttle pre-blower, or is it still in its factory location?

The hole in your intercooler suggests it's not so great. Smile

Both the 4A-GZE and 1G-GZE have the throttle pre-blower. Did it occur to you that Toyota did it this way for a reason?

the guy finally emailed me back and is sending me a new one and it is a little smaller. I think the one I have it too big and I am loosing boost. going to move the stock cams back to TDC. not any power gain by adjusting cams.

The SC is in good condition? The teflon hasnt started to lift off the rotors? No excessive wear on the end plates?

Your bypass valve isnt bypassing when it shouldnt?

A really really dumb question, you have put the overdrive on the SC the right way around, little pulley on the blower, big one on the crank (sorry, had to ask)?

S/C seems to be in good shape. I bought the bypass valve brand new and it says I need to cut the inner spring for idle quality. it is a turboxs bypass valve. seems to hold the boost in pretty good.
