Fuel Pumps- 1G-GTE Conversion Wed, 14 July 2004 07:56 Go to next message
Hi Guys.
I am planning a 1G-GTE conversion for a RA28. I was wondering if i NEED to pump up to a surge tank and have a primary and secondary pump or whether i can just have one pump? Have never worked on injected engines, only V8's and rotors. Have heard that pumping up to a surge tank stops an engine from leaning out through heavy cornering- would this be essential then for a non-race or high performance car? Have worked on a RX3 coupe with a 13b and a holley blue pump, was track raced and didn't have problems (except for the noise). Any comments appreciated. Thanks. Tom

I ran my ra28 just with a vl turbo pump without a surge tank and it would 'surge' on corners when below/around 1/4 tank

Thanks. Given that, it might be a good idea to go down the surge tank option. Any thoughts on where to place and mount an external tank?

I agree you will get 'surge' when you get down to 1/4 to 1/8 of a tank left, and I believe you get this when you use the standard 23/28 tank pick-up. Have you thought about grafting the pick-up from an EFI tank into your car and fitting a baffle / circular 'well' around the pick-up ?
I have the 12mm pick-up from a MX62 (complete with sock) welded into the top of my RA23 tank, and a 'well' welded around where the sock sits, in the bottom of the tank. This keeps some fuel always near the sock as the level drops.

What he said. A surge tank works but a baffled in-tank setup is much neater and may even be cheaper since you only need one pump.

ra23celica: are you running your setup with or without a surge tank?

Thanks Norbie.
No surge tank for me.
I can always go that way later on if I need to.
I have a half inch hose from the MX62 pick-up down
through a hole in the boot floor to a Camira fuel
pump attached via 2 captive nuts welded onto the
drivers side chassis rail, foward of the rear bumper.
Pump is mounted using a SV11 fuel pump 'cradle'.
8mm line runs forward to the 1G-GZE motor.
This all works fine.
Mitch.

The best thing about not having a surge tank is the vl fuel pumps fuck up very quickly im on my 2nd one in 6 months, don't be a tight arse like me and get one caus it is cheeper than buying another vl pump

That's my 2c

Fair enough Ben. How come you have killed a VL pump ? It uses the fuel flowing through it to keep it lubricated and cool.
Do you know what failed ? The electric motor I assume.....
I have fitted a 'pre'-fuel filter in the line from the tank to the pump to give it some protection, downstream from the pump I still have the *main* filter attached to the engine.
