Running cables for stereo in ra6x / ma6x Tue, 10 September 2002 08:52 Go to next message
I want to run power from the battery to the hatch for an amp. I took out the glovebox and couldn't see any suitable grommets in the firewall for feeding my 2x 4ga power cables through. Any ideas?

I think lots of people with ma6x or ra6x's would have done this before, so any tips? Thanks

yeah only run one cable as you can connect the Earth (- negative) to the body of the car.

Typo. Meant 2x 8ga. I was originally only going to run one, but thought I'd try powering the headunit off some decent cable too instead of being hacked into the tiny car loom. Before you say 8ga ain't big enough... this is only a 4x30w amp. I was going to earth it near the amp, yeah.

I don't seem to have that hole at all in my ra65. This in a Supra?? I thought Celica/Supra were essentially identical from the firewall back, but maybee not.

Okay, in my Celica, I ran it following the wiring loom out the side of the engine bay, through the wheel arch, through the grommet they have for coming into the cabin, then mine runs down the side to the "tunnel" along the chassis rail then under my seat where my amp is.

Drill a hole. Put in a new grommet. Only run your power thru the firewall. You should be able to find a suitable enough place to make an earth in the hatch.

When you do the other wiring for your amp. That is, rca cables and speak wires make sure to run them down the other side of the car to stop noise interference

You mean on the passenger side, through the hole where the wiring loom dissapears behind the battery (ra65, ra60 is other side i think)? great idea. Did you take the wing off to do it though?

Dabbid: I'll try to use an existing hole if I can, but I will drill a hole if I have to. The power through firewall part is the only bit haven't really figured out. I was going to run the power up the passenger side then accross behind the back seat to the amp whihc is on the driver side in the hatch in that funny storage compartment. The rcas will go on the diver's side of the trans tunnel, then under the back seat to the amp, and the speaker wiring will either go down the trans tunnel too or on the dirvers side loom tube. It is inevitable that the power will cross the speaker wirirng and oints, but i guess if I do it at 90* it will be ok. Does this all sound alight?

Do I have to keep the RCAs away from ALL power, or just the main feeds from the battery?

Yeah, the battery on the RA60 is on the drivers side, but it would be the same so the chassis is compatible for left/right hand drive. My RCA cables run down the centre of my car, so they out the way. Where my speaker cables run into my doors, they run high, then directly down the side of the car, whereas I ran the power cable lower to keep the interference down.

Where exactly are you mounting the amp?

Huh? I must be tired. I guess you're saying whatever side the battery is on there will be hole for the loom. Fair enough. I wonder why the Supra apparently has a grommet on the passenger side but the celi doesn't?

Did you take off the wing to run the cable?

Did you actually run the speaker wires up near the headlining, or just higher than the power buy still under the bottom of the door? Sorry 'bout the stupid questions, i'm knackkered.

The amp is going in the funny storage compartment opposite the jack, on the driver's side. Only place it will go really. I have my stacker there too. The amp is only 25 rms or so x4, but won't fit under the seat. I can't screw it to the back of the back seat because I put the seats down to carry stuff.

You should keep all sound cabling away from any power cabling to keep sound interence to a minimal. But i wont worry about small power wires as they would not interfere with a good set of insulted rca's

Okay. I bought some Jaycar twisted pair RCAs - I read that twisted pair is better at rejecting noise than regular sheilded ones

Yeah, you got it with the both side bit. What are you talking about wing? Which one?

All I had to do was remove the guard on the inside of the wheel arch, and secure it along then through the hole.

My power cable runs from that hole, rught down to the floor, then along the floor to that little wiring tube near the chassis rail.

My RCA cabling comes from the deck, down the centre of the car under the carpet.

The speaker wires go up into the dash, and only come close on the drivers side when they go into the door...but thats about as far away as I can get them.

Then my sub cable runs down the centre of my car to my sub under the rear seat...but then again, my amp is under my seat and is only a 2x 150wrms amp.

Wing/Guard, erm the panel of your car that contains the wheelarch is what I meant. I thought you might have to take it off (bolts along top, bolts underneath, bolts you have to open door to get at) in order to access the loom.

If you reach inside the wheel arch, you can undo the guard on the inside real easy to access them, then just put it back on after.

Thanks for that, you saved me a bit of effort. I've had all the power cabling/speakerwiring/distblocks/fuses/connectors/ etc sitting in a pile for over a month now, and will hopefully get around tgo doing it in the next couple of days.

Shame I've already redone the speaker wiring once already - from the headunit when I bought the car, but now have to do it again from the amp Wink

Thats cool dude, I've removed and replaced my dash about 5 times, removed the entire interior from two cars and replaced it, getting to know them now.

As for the speaker wiring...join the club Smile

LOL. I've never removed the dash but pretty much everyhting else has been out at least once. Driving around with one seat, no carpet and just the dash was fun for a while.

Heh. I had a quick look at the wheelarch today. I realised that now my car is lowered w/ 7" rims, I'll need to get the jack out just to get my hand in the arch Smile

I take it I just undo the few bolts that are there, and the plastic guard pops out? Looks like you have to lossen the bolts in the wheelarch too, unless the plastic guard just clips under there without being bolted on. I'll figure it out either way.

Haha, fair enough, I just had enough room if I kept turning the wheels lock to lock.

There should just be some bolts further in, and I think the ones close to the edge might be screws...I can't remember. Either way, they come off, then they just unclip from the wheel arch.

While you're down there, I'd clean it out, there is a little pocket which seems to attract lots of crap, might pay to do the other side too.

I did it today, jacked up the car, undid all the bolts/screws, popped the shield out and had a look. Your idea is great. And yes, that area just behind the mudflap collected a heap of leaves & crap. Tends to do that on other cars too.

First I thought I would have to do it on the driver's side though, as on the passenger side there is big heater box etc in the way. I did a test run popping the grommet aside and the cable came out in the passenger footwell ok so I will go ahead with it this way soon (got distracted by another project today). I tried forcing the cable through the grommet aswell, alongside the factory wiring and it came out eventually but scuffed up the cable a fair bit. I'm a bit paranoid about damaging the insulation on the cable, and don't want to drill out the grommet so am thinking about cutting off some garden hose or something and shoving it alongside the factory cables while I feed the 8gas through. I'm using a maxiblade fused distribution block near the battery to fuse them, hopefully I'll be able to attach it below the ign coil.
