Benefit of dual coil system? Fri, 16 July 2004 00:47 Go to next message
HI guys,
I've seen a couple of dual coil systems around in highly tuned cars. Some sports bikes that I have had over the years have had them too. I was just wondering what advantages this set up had over a regular single coil set-up. Thanks

Twice as many coils means the coil has twice as long to "charge up" before discharging. Basically it gives you a stronger spark. This is frequently necessary for 8 cylinder engines with high rev limits.

It would be good if you're converting to distributorless ignition (you only need two coils in a wasted-spark config), but otherwise no don't bother.
