Nothing is cost effective. The easiest would be a ra40 gt diff. they have discs and lsd but they are rare to find. I was told that skylines were the go for ra40's right width but need mounts moved. they also come is lsd and are easily found.

RA40's have a T series diff centre, same as upper-spec AE86's. That means you can get one of the many aftermarket AE86 LSD centres available and bolt it into your diff housing.
As for disc brakes, unless you're building a race car I wouldn't bother; the stock drums are adequate for street use provided you have decent front brakes.

curiously do you know what model skyline it would be from (r32, r33 etc.)?
also if you were to upgrade the fronts for better stopping power, i remember reading somewhere about using crown brakes on the ra40 strut. is this just a simple bolt together option that would give immediate results, as opposed to going the front strut conversion in the articles (hilux pugot corona thingymawhatsit) or am i reading absolute crap?
I would love to know if you find a good way of upgrading your drivetrain cheaply if you do it SIKRA40, especially the diff and fronts..

If you want to upgrade your front brakes, just do a search because Celica brake upgrades have been discussed at length. Note that anything for an RA23/28 will work on an RA40 as well.

oooh there is a completely new set of search criteria that i hadn't seen (r31 diff search).
Which is the stronger and cheaper route
r31 diff (find an lsd centre from another car later on)
of hilux diff with ma70 brakes
what have most people costed when doing this
cool1 seems to pop up with a few options he has tried and mentions at some stage a tech article, gianttomato also mentions this.

An RA40 diff is a bolt in for a sprinter and an R31 diff is a tad wide for a sprinter so tyre scrubbing may be a concern. there is an interesting/amusing thread on cheap ,alternative lsd/disc rear ends for sprinters that still raises its ugly head every now and then, and all relates to RA40's.Search for it,it's worth a read.
