An engine needs two thing to start: fuel and spark. Spark is easy enough to check, and with fuel injection it's easy to tell if the injectors are working because you can hear them clicking as the engine cranks over. A screwdriver to the ear helps if you can't hear them over the starter.
The other thing to check is the fuel pressure, which should be a constant 30-35psi at the fuel rail. Provided you have correct fuel pressure and the injectors are clicking, the engine will be getting fuel!

And don't forget to double check your vacuum lines and stuff too to make sure they are all connected or blocked.
You might want to have a can of aerostart (sp) handy too, but shouldn't need it if everything is connected properly.

are you using a electronic fuel pump? if so is it a high pressure one or a low pressure one?
the electronic fuel pump works best as close to the tank as you can

put a fuel pressure guage on the lines after the pump and before the fuel rail and check the pressure...... the vl pump should be giving it good pressure i am using one of them to, on both of my cars... if you cant get a fuel pressure guage take the line off and put it into a 600ml bottle and see how long it take to half fill when cranking over... if it takes forever to fill half way then your pump is lazy
