What do you expect? Toyota is run by accountants now, they gave the finger to their older (and better) days a long time ago. It's about time they stopped tainting the lineage with the shit they bring out these days (okay, the 2ZZ-GE is a nice engine, but that's a certain bike manufacturers fault, not toyota's)

Gives me more excuse to keep the Gt4 - or upgrade to An Evo/GTR/XR6 turbo if they kill the Celica.. At least they have a bit of heart behind the name - not these pissweak excuses for " sportscars " these days
Mr2 died years ago - this MR-S things just a cheap excuse for a porsche boxer rip off
Toyotas heads are firmly planted up their arses - they cant see beyond the camry corolla or landcruiser.

Like I said in another similar thread, has anyone seen the stripped-out MR-S or Best Motoring's Touge2? it runs a tweaked 2ZZ-GE and semi-slicks, and OH MY GOD does it tear the rectum out of the 320hp S15 it runs against. Downhill AND Uphill!
There's nothing fundamentally wrong with the current MR-2/S, it just needs some massaging to really come alive. Like ummm... nearly every other "performance" production car EVER. -And I'm talking mass production here, not short-run specials

Everyone on this forum know that toyota can build fantastic sports/race cars but yes.. like all things money is much more an issues than building a high quality perforance vehicle.
st184 sillycar - have u seen the BMI touge with the mr2 with the 2zzege up against Dori dori's hachi roku... in the first battle the hachi roku won, then in the GTR prodigy the mr2 kill it (hachi roku, aka touge monster)
i personally have felt let down by my favourie car developer over the years as "we" have always had to take the 2nd or 3rd place compared to other cars in the same class... so is this a good thing... probably... well till they get there act together.

toyota isnt capturing a youth market anymore, because the youth market doesnt have as much money as it used too, and theres more old ppl, thus cardigan cars
they're the largest manufaturer in the world, and make more profit than both GM and Ford Mo Co put together in a year (including both those companies holdings in all those other companies). they know how to make money, and thats what they're doing.
id love to see them put some money into making some real performance cars, but i dont think they really have since what....the mid to late 90's. all i can hope is that the new supra will eventually be built, and that they mite werk on some fast fours again, not liekely though, not for a while again

That's an American press release, they've been talking about killing the celica for ages
I doubt that the rest of the world will follow this trend, as it would be kind of hard for us to buy Matrix's and Scion's
So I wouldn't worry too much
Here's the link to the North American Press Release.

Yeah, I think the Celica's been surviving on it's Rally kudos for a decade or so. I didn't get it when they did the latest Celica, and no 4WD, no WRC program. Even a 4WD without the WRC team would've sorta cut it, image wise.
Hey Dar_sbb : What's that other Best.Motoring clip called? haven't seen it. sounds sweet.

the mr-s was fundamentally flawed when they put a 1zz-FE into it instead of the 2zz-GE

Why do you think Honda canned the Prelude? The traditional two door coupe cafe' cruiser is long gone, replaced by Peugeot 206 convertibles. Toyota just took longer to realise this.
Who would want to drive a Celica to the salon, when they could be driving a 206 with the roof down, their new hair style flowing in the wind like a f&g, unless of course they've had product put in it, therefore it won't, but the moral is that the celica is no longer cool.
It's 2004 people, the Celica has had its turn, and Toyota refused to make it any more than a two door camry in the end.
Hopefully they will build a 350Z, RX8 competitor.

Cool, in regards to the Celica, vanished when the last RA28/RA23 rolled off the assembly line all those years ago.
Now we can look at these timeless classic celicas with the same fondness one looks at the early Mustangs, Chargers, Corvettes and the numerous other 70's cars that are no longer made, that still catches the eyes of wannabe owners.
My 10yo nephew, who's into cars, looks at my car and drools and asks "Uncle River, why don't they make them any more?"
"Cos they're accountant dickheads," replies the Rivster.

toyota had a chance to make the mr-s interesting and it failed.
that semi-auto box thingy is a joke.could not believe the lag in gearchanges.not a performance gearbox.drove a 70,000 km old ke70 the other day and the stock auto was much sharper.also clutch in the current celica stinks like an arse if you ask it to do anything not associated with shopping.

Quote: | Basically, Toyota feels that although many car enthusiasts have enjoyed the sporting Celica and MR2 models over the years, they?re just not pulling their weight these days because they're getting beaten up by the likes of the Matrix, Corolla XRS, Solara coupe and the whole damn Scion line. The Celica was born in 1971 and had a hand in establishing the speedy subcompact segment, and was named "Import Car of the Year" and put on Car and Driver's "Ten Best Cars" list during its lifetime. The MR2 sprung to life in 1985, offering exotic car design without the hefty tag. In 1988 a supercharger was added, and recent models have featured six speed sequential manual transmissions. Toyota will stop production by the end of the ?05 model year. Get a 40 ready so you can pour some out for your fallen homies.

I really don't understand the reasoning here. They're saying they build two specifically sporty cars in their line up however people are choosing to buy sporty models of the lesser cars instead. This doesn't mean stop building the sports cars, it means build them properly.
If they released the TTE concept MR2 spider with the 1MZ-FE in it I'm sure they'd have a line of people wanting to buy one, or even with the 2ZZ-GE with proper manual gearbox. After all the 2ZZ-GE is good enough to go into an $80K+ Lotus Elise.
The celica on the other hand. Well they could re-release the ST-205 I guess but the current car is a complete loss in my opinion.
If your sports cars are being outsold by other ones don't stop making them just make better ones that will sell.

When my celica was written off (whilst parked)...I scored a hire car from the insurance, they wanted to stick me with a nissan pulsar (for free) but i paid extra costs for a mr-s, I thought the gearbox was sloppy from previous abuse, as they do say the fastest car is a hire car, but a chev turbo 400 box snaps gear so fast ...(when cruising) you dont even notice it change gears and that box is 20 odd years old
Long live the old school cars as they really 'dont make them as they used to'.
Nowadays they make throwaway cars for a throwaway society, imagine a VY commodore being a classic in 25 years time ?!!!....it just wont happen they are dog shit ugly, not built to last the distance and not designed to be classics.
In 50 or so years, what sort of cars will we have then? Completely made of a disposable plastic that will bio-degrade in a minimum of 2 years from when it was first produced? Plastic gears (dont laugh theyre in washing machines)? Plastic safety windows instead of glass? A world where everything needs to be recycled or reused. A time when we cannot use petrol for the damage it does to the globe. A time when we find that things like Televisions have been bombarding us with electrons and causing cancer (Hey it wasnt until 1979 that radioactive isotopes were removed from common toothpaste).
And when this time comes, I am sure that the humble VY Commodore will be seen by the 60 year olds as classics. I remember when this first came out! The new GEN III V8 they had. Did you know they produced 255 kW when new? And they had real bodies back then. Not like these plastic things now. Boy. They dont make them the way they used to.)
