3rd Gear crunching on the down change

Hi,
When I down change to 3rd gear I often get that dreaded crunching sound. So, I use the brakes now and down change to 2nd gear.
However, I want to know if anyone has any ideas on this? If I am doing anything over 50kph I can be sure it will crunch when going down to third. Under 50kph she doesn't crunch if I do the down change slow.
Going up the gears is no probs. Going down to any of the gears except 3rd is fine. I've tried double-pumping the clutch on the down change, but same thing happens.
Is this an adjustable thing or something more sinister? Also, who fixes P51 gearboxes or who can check them out? Sure, I can prolly put in a W50 - but that won't be the same as my P51 and I prefer to keep all the original stuff on the car.

Worn synchros. As a quick fix you could try running thicker oil, but long-term you'll have to pull the box apart and rebuild it with new synchros.

Awwww shit Norbie, that's not I wanted to hear 
Maybe I'll jam some sawdust in the gearbox! Seriously though, anyone know someone who can fix this? Where do I get synchro parts for this gearbox? Japan eBay?

Initially try 30 grade oil. If this does not give some relief then look further.

I don't know much about the P51 box, but if you're lucky the synchros might be the same as the W50. Have a chat to your local Toyota parts man.
