P Plater Curfew

The ACT government is proposing a P Plater curfew of 10pm - 6am.
I think this idea is absolutely ridiculous. When I was on P's I used to pick up my parents, sister and/or friends who had been drinking. Not allowing a P Plater to do this is actually encouraging drink driving.
Likewise I don't see it solving any problems, as the only people likely to take attention are the law abiding ones who wouldn't be driving like idiots anyway. Everyone else is just going to remove the P plates.
I also used to drive to work at 5am - doing so under this proposed law would be illegal - what a crock!

Don't worry dude, theres a 95% chance that it wont go through. In NSW they wanted to ban us from driving after 12am not sure until when.
I used to wake up at 4:30 and drive out to training for a 5am start, so that'd make it 'impossible' to go train, therefore we become obese
There's another post like this "Probationary license", have a read

not really showing both sides of the story here

Hi,
The problem is that there is the small number of dickhead P-platers who have had their license for only a short time and carry on like they're masters of the road. They think they can handle every situation with poise and aplomb - yet they can't.
However, the P-plater has paid for their license and it would be a limit on their freedom to prevent them from driving whenever they desire. I doubt it would get passed through, but, if it did, I would hope the government reduces your license, registration and insurance fees seeing they've effectively banned you from driving for 40% of the time.
Some old people are annoying when they drive. Some drive too fast and others too slow. IMHO I would fine a person doing 20ks under the limit as much as someone going 20ks over the limit. I hate being caught behind some knucklehead doing 40 in a 60 zone.
Gender limitations? That'd be interesting to implement.
I'd prefer the government to slap massive (and, I mean MASSIVE) annual tariffs on large 4WD vehicles that are used only in the city.

i reckon another licence test should be mandatory once people reach a certain age (like 60 or 65 or something)
im not discriminating, its a fact that the human body and its senses deteriorate as they age- and if they think they're fine, they shouldn't have anything to worry about taking the test.
i know im not perfect (says me who has currently lost their licence) but i think some older people are as bad as some of the younger people. im not speaking for all oldies, as im not speaking for all p platers.
but the amount of times ive been driving down a two lane road, and the old fart next to me has decided to drift over into my lane, with no blinker or idea im there, and i've had to take drastic braking measures, is quite alarming. as is the times that ill approach a roundabout, and have them cruise through with blinkers on and go straight.
just my opinion, thats all. i like old people.... just not when they are wearing hats and driving their old shitboxes...
does anyone else find drivers who are wearing hats particularly dangerous? i do.
they should curfew hat-wearing types.
im tired and ranting
goodnight!

River, thats an awesome point to bring up... I will be the first one at the government's steps first thing on a Monday morning requesting 40% of my annual car costs back...
Evil, there is a test that elderly ppl must take at like the age of 85 I think... Also, as soon as you turn 80, you must get a doctors certificate to say that you are fit and well to drive... This must be done each and every year...

Which lost dickheads voted yes?.
If this went through, do you realize that it would mean you could be 20 and on your green p's and NOT ALLOWED TO GO OUTSIDE IN YOUR CAR. This is such a joke, lets bring back a total alcohol ban too! That'll solve society's problems.
Fact is there are idiot drivers out there and there always will be. All ages, on P's and not.

This curfew was actually brought up about 6years ago, during a meeting I had with quite a high up RTA exec,if you could call the useless waste of air that.. I will be surprised if it doesnt come in! Once again it proves how out of touch these people are that make decisions that affect the population of this country..I absolutely blasted him, they were also talking about (driving in the wet) bans aswell.jokers..All it comes down to is it is cheaper to ban drivers than invest money in training them to a level that will enable them to handle themselves in all driving conditions:
My sloution ,
as aften people winge and then dont offer an alternative,
is:
Keep the same minimum 50-60 hours of driving but make it mandatory to take 5 professional driving lessons.
Education seminar consisting of, crash videos(dont have to be too graphic but still have to make an impact)car handling, and tricks and tips of defensive driving techniques.
Driving test: Standard, plus freeway merging test and wet weather test on specialist couse, this will be completed towards the end of the 6 months L's.
Restriction of power output of car, till the end of your P's( I seriously dont agree with 17yo drivers being able to get behind the wheel of even a Skyline GTS).big penalities should apply here and even bigger if you lend your car to someone of this age.
thats just a start but I think it will make more of an impact than the stupid proposal they have suggested.

most is a generalisation - a generalisation of p platers going out on the road thinking theyc an drive when in reality they have only just scratched the surface for the experience they need to say they " know how to drive "
My oppinion is the following
Curfews mean nothing - not a damn thing when it comes to P platers - alot of kids would earn their living after hours - and that basically ruins all chance of them to earn an income - I know i spent most of my " p plate " time working nightfill + closeup at the local safeway - without that i woulsdnt have been able to pay for my uni education or purchase the things i need to get on with independant living
Whats needed is more driver education , MORE RESTRICTION ON POWER OF CARS OWNED BEFORE A CERTAIN AGE , and more responsibilty noted by young people to stick to the rules , not tru to be hero's
Now the first 2 can be don by the GOVT , the third requires maturity on the part of the driver ..
who out there would disagree with me in saying that an average 18 yo kid could *truely* handle something akin to a nissan GTS , WRX , V8 commodore, modiefied for performance only after a few years of trundling with mum or dad beside them ?
In victoria we have laws stating what cars can and cant be driven by p platers - its called a power to weight ratio law.
Now i know any car can kill, hell a skateboard can kill in the wrong hands - thats where point number two comes into it - Limit the cars that can be driven - and make sure kids can handle any emerency they come across with more chance of getting out of it unscathed!
Ie cheaper driver education/defensive driving courses - cheaper motorsport avenues , anything to teach them to truely understand their cars and what those cars will respond to if something goes pear shaped
..
Anyway thats my rant - have fun arguing my points

OHHHHH i am so glad i dont have probationary drivers licence restrictions. If you ask me there are dickheads in every age group of drivers, not just old ppl, not just p platers. So honestly a fix like this will not work it will just end up raising revenue for the associated state governments as with most new road laws introduced of late.
My thoughts anyway

Not trying to bignote myself here - But I could've easily handled any of the cars you mentioned at 18. A handful of my mates (mostly farm-raised) could've handled them nicely too.
That said, I'd be a 75% proposition to be dead or seriously injured by now if I'd dropped straight into one of them at 18, not from lack of car control, but 'cause of seriously poor (or comlete lack of) judgement. I only got this far unscathed because I had the room and grip in-hand to find n escape route or stop when I fucked up.
Good judgement and sound decision making is what keeps EVERYONE OUT OF TROUBLE IN THE FIRST PLACE. Car control should only enter the equation if you're having a rip on a quiet road with manageable risks, or in the wet.
