Name me a car thats cheap, fast, economic, stylish and safe! If we are looking for a price range under 8k. Im not overly knowledgable when it comes to cars so i'd like to know if there are any makes/models i should watch for? The problem is im stuck with a '83 ford laser because i thought i was going interstate and didnt need a car back home. Now i may not so im shopping. Any ideas? Cheers.

But can they perform? I thought they were a bit boring. I definately dont want a hatch, not a corolla hatch anyway. Need something a little more comfortable.

Got my ae82 3 years ago for $4000 and only had 65000km on it

ma61!
definitly!
stylish, sexy, corners like it's on rails... plus an engine bay big enough for a 6-cyl turbo if you wanna upgrade.
There have been a few around with the 6m-ge (3 litre non-turbo, decent power) for the $4k mark (though that price is retreived from my dodgy memory)

Bah, i don't know. It's so hard to find a decent car for sale. One that suits my criteria anyway. Ma61 looks decent but hard to find a nice cheap, intact model. I reckon im just going to sell my '83 laser now as i can't stand it much longer. Too gutless. Only a measley 1.3, not to mention the front wheel drive!! Anyway, does anyone know a place with sorted listings of cars for sale. Or someone who is selling a cheap car with good potential?

If it gives you a better idea, im looking for a 4 door, sedan, non-import, no turbo, stylish, economic and cheap. Good luck to me eh? Well, if you have any ideas, let me know. Was that Ma61 un-roadworthy, i dont want to have to repair much, at least not at first. it would need to hit the ground running as this isnt my toy car but the one i would need to still use frequently.

MX83 Cressida. Non import, non turbo, stylish, four doors, dynamically well laid out. Work on in time = 1JZ + R154, or 1UZ..?

Perhaps the RA65 Celica? It's not four doors however...
The Sprinter sounds like a good bet if you want to have fun, or if your lucky go retro and get a '79 Escort RS. They're so cool!

You are asking for three things that contradict here. You want it to be quick but reliable, large but economical. You can't have all of those.
For quick, cheapish and reliable I would get a AE92 Corrolla SX (make sure it's an SX). They have a 1.6ltr 100kw Twin Cam in them (warning, the 4A-FE engine is also twin cam, but sucks). They are rather quick too as they are lightweight and if you don't push them I hear they are fairly economical. Unfortunatly they are FWD. Power to weight is 87kw/ton.
For something slightly less reliable and more costly on fuel, but larger I would go a Nissan Silvia S13 CA18DE or SR20DE non turbo. They are rear wheel drive with 97kw (CA) and 103kw (SR). They are however a Jap import, but there are heaps of them about so parts aren't too hard to come by. Power to weight you are looking at CA: 83kw - SR: 87kw/ton.
Larger again, in sedan format and RWD but with a larger 3.0ltr engine is the Cressida as mentioned. I'm not sure on it's power figures but they should look something like 90kw/ton.
Another option you have is the AE86 Sprinter. You can pick them up for around $3,000. Unfortunately unlike the other cars mentioned in my post they have rear drum breaks, use carburettors rather than fuel injectors, and have a non-crossflow engine. They are however all manual, and RWD. They are also a hatch (or rather lift back) and are expensive for their age. I would advise against getting one unless you love them and plan on upgrading the rear end with discs, and doing an engine swap for a 4A-GE 100kw from an AE92 Corolla SX (or a big port from a JDM spec AW11 or AE86 if you can find one). I must warn you though, messing around with them can be a pain in the ass as Hirogen and I'm sure a few others will inform you. The other option of course is to get a pre-modified Sprinter.
Power to weight you are looking at 50kw/ton with the 4A-C stock engine, or around 90kw/ton with a 4A-GE 100kw from the corolla.

Shraka, he can have all of these! He never said he wanted a large car, just a four door car. But, I agree with Shraka in that the Corolla SX or GTi would be a good bet. The GTi is simply an SX with a downgraded interior FYI. I am actually on the lookout for a good deal on a GTi in South West WA.

Okay, but Caedere did say not a hatch. The AE86 is a liftback and the AE92 is a hatch so yeah.
You may also be interested in a ST162 Celica SX. It's has a 2.0ltr 3S-GE engine. It's a lift back (I think, or is it a hatch?). It's FWD and only 2 door, but is Aus delivered. For the total power you are looking at around 84kw/ton.
If your not so interested in mods or realy good performance a ST182 Celica is newer with power windows, central locking and I think keyless entry standard. It does however have a 2.2ltr 5S-FE engine. The F stands for economy (go figure) so yeah, it's economical for a 2.2ltr engine, but wont revv nicely or give great power like a 3S will. It's also less powerfull than the ST162 at 79kw/ton.
If you want to swap the engine out of your car, an AE70 Corolla with a 100kw 4A-GE engine swap may suit you. It's RWD and very similar to an Aus spec AE86 Sprinter (except in looks).
Unfortunatly they stopped making small to mid sized RWD 4-door cars in the 80s.
