MA61 5ME Blown Head Gasket Wed, 11 September 2002 07:53 Go to next message
Hi all,

I'm fearing a blown head gasket on my MA61, it's loosing coolant, there are bubbles in the radiator and it runs pretty rough, it's been like this for a while but it's gradually getting worse and it's time to do something about it ! I'm going to attempt (with help from a mate whose done this before) to do the head gasket myself. I'm just wondering if there is any procedure (such as the on-line TSRM for the 5MGE) on the net or can anyone recommend any books that cover this ? I've checked the local library and there are the Haynes manuals for the supra/cressida was going to use these ?
Also what else should I check/replace while I'm doing the head
gasket ? I'm doing the valve stem seals at the same time as I'm
blowing a bit of smoke when I pull away after idle. I think I've
read I might have to do the chain tensioner, any other things as well ?
I'm in Sydney, anyone know of a good place/recommended brand of head gaskets etc. to use. I was looking at engine parts australia and they quoted me $86 for a HG and $22/set for the VSS is this a reasonable price ? I guess I will need intake/exhaust gaskets etc. as well Is this what's included in a a Valve Regrind Set ?

Sorry for all the questions ! I'm new to the forums and haven't done too much work on cars in the past, but am learning quickly with the Supra Very Happy

Thanks,

Matt.

Your 5M probably needs a lot more than a headgasket and seals by now. You say it's been like this for a while so there's a good chance some of your cylinder head has eroded away - and that means it's pretty much a basket case. I've seen it before. Sad

You're nuts spending money on that engine anyway, this is the perfect excuse for a 5M/6M-GE conversion - or maybe something even better! Smile

i have a head in absolute, very excellent condition. bolt on and drive away option. not rebuilt, but in original/excellent condition, no play on rocker supports, no wear on valves, straight, not cracked, purrrfecto. also have timing sprockets and vibration damper, near new to suit. might evn have a 'within spec' chain. $100 and its all yours. add a new head gasket and youre away. i also have a crank in A++ condition, and also full engine bolts etc etc.

if youre interested. drop me a line here, or PM me, or email me Smile

cheers
ed

Hey guys, some people cant afford - or dont know how to pull whole engines out and put new engines in.

If he just wants a head gasket done, help him with any questions he has.

I did the head gasket a couple of years ago on my first MA61. At the same time I had the head fully reconditioned, new injectors put in, and put a set of extractors on it.

mattc:
those prices you quoted sound pretty good.

good luck with your H/G, hope it all goes ok.

Thanks Guys,

I do realise that an engine swap would be the ideal (and great) solution, and one I would love to do ! But at the moment I don't have the funds or the room to do it (I'm in a unit with a small single garage). Also the Supra is my only car and I need it for work so can't really go without it for more than a weekend Sad

I thought I might have head erosion/warping etc. problems as I have let it go for quite a while ! and that was one of the reasons I posted on the forums. I was half planning on getting another head and doing a swap, and now thanks to ed I probably can Smile
Should be able to get the head, gaskets etc. do the swap and then onto the next job !! There's always something Smile

Matt.
