different 18R Pistons Wed, 21 July 2004 00:27 Go to next message
I have been looking for a set of pistons for an 18R-GEU. i phoned all the toyota dealerships in brisbane, and i found that the GEU pistons are very different to the G pistons. the g pistons are dome top and square where the pin goes through the skirt and i believe they have a compression ratio of 9.7:1 . the GEU pistons are flat top and have no flat areas where the pin meets the skirt. both sets of pistons have fly cuts for the valves which is what sets them apart for the 18R-C pistons. the delima i face is that i need the GEU pistons for the lower compression ratio as i am turbo charging the engine, and i cant machine the G pistons as that would weaken the crown and i would burn holes in them. does anyone have any ideas about wot i could do? i cant get the GEU pistons from anywhere in bris, i found a set of G pistons that are 40thou OS but cant use them.

Are you sure you cant machine the G pistons we used to take of up to 10mm then flycut for conversion in L20 datsun motors to run on avgas.

I remember reading somewhere that the pistons that VW sell as standard replacement parts can be used in boosted / blown 18R/RG engines, they are standard forged items and suit a lower comp. ratio.
Pick the brain of the VW parts dealer.
Mitch.

Cheers for that mitch. i will do some more research and see what i can come up with. Its an interesting concept using VW pistons because i know that they have an unusual offset for the pin. somthing to do with the design of the flat 4 motor.

I wouldnt go for the VW pistons, last i heard someone ended up with a 7.0-7.5:1 compression ratio Shocked I would never want something that low.

If you have a spare set of 18R-G pistons, i might be interested in them as a temporary measure for myself, (Maybe)

I too am going the path of the exhaust driven sucker, and am currently looking at some aftermarket forged pistons for my 18R-G. At the moment there is two of us looking at buying these pistons, so if you joined in it might help make prices a little nicer (already below $1000, more like 800-900).

Contact me if you want more info.

can somebody identify what this piston came out of? i know it's from an 18-r of some sort. I used to have an 18-RU wich kicked ass, i believe it had high comp pistons, but then agian it was probably worked abit.

Thos pistons u posted photos of look like 18R-C pistons. the only difference i can see by those photos, is the oil gallery on the side near the pin holes. hope that helps

Read the part number off them if you can.

As for the forged pistons. Yeah we are looking at around mid 8:1 compression, perfect for turbo. Probably Wiseco items. PM sent.

two numbers inside the actual piston, on one side it says 34010 and the other side 61. Any idea if the 18-RU pistons are just the same as 18-RC?

If your looking specifically for forged with low comp, I cannot help. But if your looking for 18rgeu with 8.2 comp I have a set if thats what you may want.
