AE82 mystery coolant leak Wed, 11 September 2002 11:32 Go to next message
hey all,

Was wondering if anyone here could help with this one. I have a stock standard AE82 with the 4A-C(I think. 1.6 SOHC anyway)engine.

The last few days I have noticed a small amount of coolant on the garage floor. Looking around a bit I think I have found the source of the leak but I was wondering what it is actually coming from.

The leak seems to be coming from the area around the crank pully. I know the water pump is right next to this but I'm stuffed if I can actually see the leak. Coolant is dripping onto the top of the flange where the sump attaches then onto the ground.

I am assuming the cause of the leak is the O-rings in the water pump or the water pump itself. What do you think? Any and all help is much appreciated.

Later,

Steve.

It's probably the water pump - They usually leak out through a small hole in the bottom when they fail.

I have the same car and since you say it's comming from around the crank pully area it's more than likely to be the water pump. You can try to add an additive to the radiator (think its called radiator stop leak or something) but I doubt the $3 stuff is going to work. Id suggest getting it replaced with a water pump made in japan which comes with a lifetime warranty but they cost $85.(http://www.marlows.com.au/8010580.html) The thing is it's a pain in the backside to install since the timing belt cover has to come off & your working in a tight space. My advise is do the thing properly once so you don't have to remove everything again.

Thanks guys. I bought a water pump and started to pull it timing belt cover appart but once I could see in I found it unlikely to be the water pump as I couldn't see any leaks from there. Are there any welsh plugs down in that area? That is my only other idea.

It gave me the shits trying to get in there as well so I'm just gonna pay someone to do all the dirty work.

Any help on the welsh plug idea would be great.

Thanks,

Steve.

I went out side and had a look for you, I found a welsh plug next to the fuel pump, but wasn't able to see if there were any next to the water pump. The stupid exhaust system is in the way and since my car is low I can't get under it to see if I can see anything from underneath. If you want next time I have my car on a hoist I'll see if I can find any welsh plugs in that area. It's really hard to find the leak since it's a small one, the heat from the engine combined with the heat from the exhaust may dry out a bit of the leaking coolant.

It is very unlikely to be a welsh plug, in most cases it will either be the front seal in the pump is gone and you will find it dripping from the front relief hole underneath once the engine is warmed up to temp, or it could be leaking from one of the two O-ring seals either on the block where the pump fits to or at the rear pipe to waterpump seal.

It could also be a pin hole leak in the alloy body of the water pump, or its alloy backing plate. (found this one the hard way!!)

This can be hard to spot. Took me ages to find it when mine went. You might have to getthe engine up to temperature before it becomes evedent.

I'd have to agree with irally, 90% of the time its the water pump or its o-rings and seals.

The water pumps arnt too hard to change, just bloody fidley.

Craig.
