icon5.gif  Where to find out if I need snow chains ?? Wed, 21 July 2004 12:20 Go to next message
Hi ... driving tomorrow night to the snows, pitstopping at Cooma first ...

WHO can tell me i.e. a website/weather report site etc. where I can see if I need to get chains for the drive between Canberra and Cooma ??

Someone told me "some road" was closed between Canberra and Cooma and thus I may need chains?

We intend to get chains AT Cooma, but if there is snow on the roads before then, might need to get them priod to reaching Cooma..

Any assistance ?? Shocked

Thanks

National Parks.

Kosciosko National Park to be exact. THey have control of the roads up where it actually snows.

PLEASE do not drive on a road with chains unless directed to do so. I cannot stand people ripping up my hard earned tax/donation money.

I would VERY surprised if you neede chains between Canberra and Cooma......

Last year was the first time in 13 years I've seen it snow outside the NP...... And that was IN Jindabyne.

Just get 'em at Jindy.... The BP will sort you out.

i actually find that BP in jindy has too limited a range - they didnt even have chains that would fit my dad's Audi A4!!

So being a quattro i told dad to forget about them.... and low and behold, chains were required for all two wheel drive cars!! HAHAH!!

they had nothing for the celica either... 215/50*15

I get my chains from the BP on the north end of Cooma. As well as all my rental gear for my povo mates who own nothing.

Yeah, Rhythm are good..... I used to get demo boards off them all the time..... They've usually got some half decent ski-wear that is hella cheap too, like last season's stuff for povo mates! Razz Laughing

FYI,

Last weekend it snowed about 3" about 5km out of Canberra, I actually went to my mates place in Royalla (about 25km's out of Canberra) and we snowboarded at his property, Yes, it was pretty shit boarding, everytime you turned you dig up a pile of mud Laughing

but it was great fun,

you will never need chains between Canberra and Cooma (maybe once every 10 years),.. and there is no legal requirement to carry them,...

when I go up I just call the Cooma Information Centre and they give you the full road report, Only in extreme cases do they close the roads, I havn't used chains in the last 6 years, and I go up at least 5-10 times per season,...

Funny thing, here in Canada where it does really snow, chains are not legal on public roads. We do just fine without them. I drove two different MA6x cars for years in the snow with good all season tyres, no problems. Now I drive this...

Yes I have posted the picture before, but a typical winter snow day on a typical road near my house.

Here in Finland where I live we get every year about 1m of snow. Snow chains are illegal here too but so is "regular summer tires" during snowy time of the year. So I have to use studded tires. Allseason tires are legal but those suck big time. Allseason tires are slippery in every weather conditions.
