New BA Ford Turbo's Wed, 11 September 2002 12:17 Go to next message
Now that a mainstream manufacturer in Australia is going the turbo route, it will be a matter of time before cheap(?) second hand turbos in quantity might make their way down to people who want to mod their cars. In the latest MOTOR magazine, I read that the new XR6 turbo will use Garrett GT 30 or GT 40's. Hopefully the economies of scale will bring the price of such hardware down. This is probably wishfull thinking, and the turbos used sound like they are a little restricted. They are talking 240 flywheel Kws, when top spec GT30's are specced at 500+ hp.

I dunno if they are going to be GT30's. They look awesome with the twin-cam head and the funky heat shielding and stuff. They apparently had 270kW showing during testing...nice Smile

The question is, Do I upgrade the engine in my AU or do I just trade it in on a BA? I like my Falcon with the bodykit and all...

Go the BA !!

though i think if i had the dollarz id put it into the new XR8 Smile

nods to 270kw too - just proves what ive been saying all along that this car will be a slyline slayer ...

they are only running about 5 or 6 PSI on those turbos - so just imagine output levels with a higher boost and better engine management ?

im looking forward to a GTS vs barra xr6 comparison

just a footnote the GT falcons coming back too - with a 5.4 litre twin overhead cam v8 - with whats been claimed to be 320+KW and 550+lb of torque

apparently its the most powerful v8 ever to go into a factory ford sedan or something along those lines according to motor mag ..

Ill be buying the magazine tomorrow - to have a good read on the plane

What i don't get is HSV made a Supercharged version of the GTS 300kw + Supercharger Evil or Very Mad but only sold them in England as Ford complained so they wern't aloud to put them on the market here, so with Ford bringing this Turbo i'm looking forward to see what Holden will pull out now Very Happy

i think that supercharger kit was an aftermarket dealer accessory - not factory ..

Holden as far as i know are sticking with the gen3 5.7 in the VX - maybe with a slightly uprated power output but they still wont match the BA's 5.4 mod v8 ..

thry have a new v6 in the works - but it still doesnt outstrip the ford 6 ..

BTW is it just me or does the new commodore look like a goddamn lancer ?

Holdens stuffed a winning package by ricing it up with that back end - YUCK!!!

How long till commodore altezzas and EVO bodykits on SS's..

Sorry Guys but i think that holden May have created their own AU falcon ..

I dont think that it will matter is Holden brings out a new V6! Ford will just fit the Jag V6 the very next day! This has been of the cards for a while now!

heh - actually they would be smarter to stick with the inline 6 Smile i like the old inline 6 - torquey as hell for a 6 , easy to service - good parts basis in OZ - and 4 litres of cpacity goodness ..

Yeah I like the inline six aswell! I swear those engines are bullet proof. Myself and mates have tried our best many times to brake one with no success! We nearly made it one day when we empted the sump on a XD and drove from Yandina to Brisbane Rolling Eyes The only thing that happened was it made heaps of noise and lost some power but after that we left it cool down over night and filled it with oil the next day and sold it for $500 Shocked

Yeah, was an HSV GTS in the UK. Only the UK branch fitted the S/C. Read about them in an EVO mag.

Classique I presume you meant that it would be a skyline slayer?

Somehow I doubt it, when the skyline slayed all in '91 on the mountain, it was limited to 340 KW. Power doesn't have mych to do with the skylines greatness (the R32 anyway) it the overall package. It's a chasis that rivals ferrari's and other erotica all the way. Almost any engine can make 340 KW, least of all a 5.4 litre. Power never was an issue, just sucky ford design.

That said, Ford aren't trying to produce a racecar, just something to please all the yobbo's in Oz and they have succeded there (although I bet "quad-cam" has caused some head-scratching. "Gee Bob, where do the pushrods go???"

Tim.

If they're half as good as a 1UZ, they'll be doing well.
(Especially since they've had well over a decade to get it right!!!)

Personally, I can't wait for the turbo Barra.
A new generation VL turbo that handles, steers amd stops. Very Happy

Lucky me, I have a mate who's an engineer at Ford.
I've been able to drive quite a lot of the offerings of the blue oval and have come away reasonably impressed.
An XR8 pursuit ute with the 5.6 was a lot of fun.
Hung on to the road much better than it had any right to, especially unloaded.

He told me he'll be able to bring home a turbo as soon as they are officialy released.

Rolling Rolling Very Happy Very Happy Rolling Rolling

Now imagine, big exhaust and boost up on 4 litres of 6 cylinders.
I'm pretty sure unichip can still hack the EECV EMS to keep everything happy........

From what I've been told, the IC is actually a decent size from the factory too. Razz

I was comparing a GTS Skyline with the falcon - the handling package - ie 4 paws and turbo of course would beat a RWD around a track like bathurst .. Just look at the sierras - those things were equally as grunty as the skyline GTR - but it was the hanfdling that killed the sierras .. 4wd vs rwd

Anyway - i dont think the 5.4 is a quad cam - i think its a duel overhead cam design - though i have to check .. The mustangs 4.6 is a quaddie all alloy block ..

the fact is the ford 6 can easily be beefed up to 300kw + the bottom ends on them are strong - isnt there a XE 4.1 turbo on full boost putting out over 320 KW ??

As for the XR's handling - they are mighty impressive for a family sedan - the back end grip is just incredible - never ever seems to want to let go - and the front turns in crisply ..

Its going to be interesting to see how they do go - I know , even though less technological than the skyline , the falcons going to be a good thing for the aussie car market and i wont be ashamed to have one in my driveway ..
And i can bet they will be cheaper to buy than a new GTS import

Anyone here seen the retro GT40 Ford in the US put out last year ??

well if anyone cares to know - that same motor is going into our humble falcon ..

we are the first in the world to get it in a passenger vehicle ..

as a follower the GT falcon in stock trim due out next year will be putting out close to 320KW .. thats just the GT - What happens when the GTHO comes out again ???

do we see a supercharged or turbocharged version of the v8 there ??

Rumours floating around a while back is of a GTHO mule running the 5.4 and all whell drive !!!
we know fors going into the awd falcon market with the "raptor"

i wonder if they will put this next step[ into a gtho

I guess all will be revealed at the Sydney Motor Show next month. While they've been pretty disappointing the last few years, (except for the motorbike section) i'll cough up the dough for a ticket. Who else is coming?
