20V silver top problems

What a nightmare, I have had a mate ask me several questions that relate to his silvertop 20v, to which i cant tell him the answers.
He has asked me how does he tell if his wheel bearings are done, he has said there are vibrations when he turns the wheel to the left slightly. Is there a way that i can tell him to look for tell tail signs or how i can check it for him?
Also he tells me that he is using about 1 to 1.5 litres of oil per 500 km or so....to which he is telling me that his head gasket is gone....again Is there a way that i can tell him to look for tell tail signs or how i can check it for him?
Also what is recommended fuel consumption and idle RPM. for the 20v silver top and how do you test if it is using too much fuel and if the idle is too high.... and if so how do you alter the RPM and the fuel consumption
cheers

Hey Leigh long time no speak
1. When my wheel bearings went in mine it was a grinding noise constantly. Noise when turning sounds to be CV's.
2. Get it compression tested
3. I used to get 400 to a tank on mine, i think stewey got close to 500. To adjust the idle i think you have to pull the plenum off and adjust it on the throttle bodies. Pretty sure Ben Wilson has replied to a post about this either here or on twincam16.org.
Hope this helps

Mine seems to chew through a fair bit of oil as well. It has been compression tested and everything.

oil usage is more then likely one of two things
oil leak
oil rings leaking oil into combustion chamber
does it blow smoke?

Yeah i can nearly get around about 500kms to a tank if i drive it nicely and don't rev it to much. I got to about 430kms about 3weeks ago and the orange fuel light had just started to come on meaning there is at least enough left for another 50kms i'm thinking.
I top up oil frequently after one time i did not see my mechanic frequently enough and my engine started making a funny noise can't remember exactly what it sounded like but i let it do that for about a week before taking it into the mechanic and when i did he popped the bonnet straight away stood there for a second and then checked my oil and there was not a drop on the dipstick. He told me to run a heavier weight oil or something so i use a 20w-50w valvoline oil and it is not to bad now. My car also blows a fair bit of smoke when i plant my foot.
There was a guy on the twincam16 forums called Limbi who told me on his 20v to stop the oil problem he hooked up an oil cooler but don't ask me how he did it because i have no idea i just know i have an oil cooler on my car but i'm pretty sure it ain't hooked up.
Hey AE86slut are you the person who owns a 20v that has had a microtech put on by Dale if so is there any chance of checking your car out i'm curious about how well the 20v responds to this mod.
I have been in a 20v with a Wolf on it and i wasn't overly impressed. It did make it rev a bit better though and lifted the rev cut.

Yep, mine is a bit smokey too, but only seems to be when I give it a bootfull and past 4,200 (where VVT cuts in). I have been told by a few ppl who have a fair bit of experience with 20V's that they ALL seem to smoke.
corolla madness:
Yes, Dale tuned my car. Most ppl told me to just use the standard computer when I got the engine, but I had already made up my mind to not cut/bash the firewall and to use quad coils, therefore needed an aftermarket ECU.
It works very well IMO. What do you drive? I am happy for you to check out the car dude.
Cheers,
Jeremy.

ive talked to a few ppl and some toyota mechanics and they recon u shouldnt use thick oil in cars with vvti as u need the thinner oil to get into the vvti mechanism...
from memory they use a 10w-30 oil

before adjusting idle screws
remove intake and plenum and with contct cleaner or kero
nothin to strong like carby cleaner
clean the throttle bodies
as they get carboned up and reduce idle
do this then if idle is still low then adjust idle screws
say 1 full turn on every screw
then refit and recheck idle

hey there Leigh, sounds like you need a mechainc, one that fix's the cars at all types of hours, like one that is there from 10pm till 3am then gives up and gets the car towed to his work and never gets paid lol
