Q. Chassis being twisted by torque.... Thu, 22 July 2004 17:36 Go to next message
Everyone wants big power, and everyone wants to go faster, how do you know when you are hitting the power limits of your vehicle.

I have heard too much torque can twist the chasis of your car, so how do you know when you are at that point, and what would you do to stop this. Do you fit a roll cage, tig weld, add braces here and there.

Or is this torque twisting issue just an old wifes tale.

I'm just after opinions, its not a debatible topic, just how far would you go before you stop and ask yourself will this be ok for my car. Have any of you actually thought about this ?? Or don't really care.

The old Torana's used to torque twist a hell of a lot when fitted with stacks of power...

I'm yet to hear of a celica / corolla torque twisting though...

I would imagine if you're going to produce enough power to cause it to twist you'd want to add bracing along strategic weak points of the chassis.

*don't ask where these would be - I don't really know*

from a personal point of view...if I had a car with enough power to launch semi sideways and torque twist, I'd want the security of knowing I wasn't going to tear the car apart on a hard launch.

my 2cents...worth about 1cent Smile

It is definitely most noticeable and worst from a standing start with excellent traction. i.e. at the drag strip. First tell tale sign is when launching one front wheel stays on or near to the ground while the other lifts from the ground considerably. Other ways are when your windscreen pops up which can usually coincide with the bending of your A-pillar.

I know more crossmembers would help to stop it, but i am unsure whether this is done or there is other methods, basically joining one chassis rail to the other.

That Gold VH Commodore with a Twin-Turbo 308 twists its chassis off the line. It creases the C-pillars and the roof when it launches, and it's got a Full roll-cage!

If you're putting down 1000h.p. or more, you've gotta invest in a fully triangulated, integral roll cage / space frame. That means stripping the interior (including dash, boot etc) and WEOLDING that sucker to the puny sheetmetal at the suspension mounts and the sub-frames.

There's PLENTY of VL-Turbos out there proving that lots of torque over a long period of time WILL pop welds, crack body-panels and weaken pretty much everything.

Seam welding helps if a cage is too much of a hassle.

havent you seen the fast and the furious Laughing

but you can get chassis twist, and i have seen a chassis twist completely!!!! not a good thing, not at all... basically throw the shell in the bin and transfer everything to a new shell

what you can do is add another crossmember, weld more metal to chassis to make it thicker, your standard roll cages and stuff

but at the end of the day too much torque for the car is too much torque for the car no matter what... ask your engineer what too much is as they should be able to calculate the max torque for your car... but when your doing stuff like that then you know there is a weely bar required and no road worthiness!!!!
