Is there any problems with running an engine with out the cam belt cover if its one of those big plastic covers? or is it just a dust protector?

For cars running a dry belt such as 4ag, its no big issue but its not a good idea to regularly get it wet or oily (as it may slip).
Many ppl run their engines without them. My 4ac did so for 9mnths without fault.

Do you like to be able to count to ten with out removing your shoes? Exposed cam belts/gears have a voracious appetite and just love a steady diet of fingers, loose clothing etc.
If not running covers, be careful and treat those hungry teeth with respect.
That said, I have run without cam covers with a wide range of cars, the only one to give me any concern was a RS2000 that picked up a stone (while driving off road) that snapped the belt. Long wait for recovery. Long walk home.
Cheers

So there's not much point of not having the Cam gear cover on???

I thought the 4age didn't do any damage if the belt breaks. Pistons don't hit valves (non-interference ) etc.. ?

The timing belt is ribbed, it can't slip.

Yes It can skip a tooth if the timing belt is slippery or loose.

As for the 4age im not sure if damage can occure if the belt breaks but I know for a fact that on most twin cam engines, if the timing belt breaks damage can occur

Uh... if your timing belt is loose enough to skip a tooth, you have serious problems that weren't caused by a bit of oil!

word on the street is that all toyota engines that run a timing belt are non-interference.

Non interference design IF standard profile cams, block heights, head thickness, etc.
Think about it,
increase cam lift = more valve protrusion into chamber,
deck the block = higher relative piston position,
shave head = more valve protrusion.
Just something to keep in mind. I have broken an timing belt on a noninterference engine at high RPM. Guess what happened.....
