more 18rc-18rg questions Fri, 23 July 2004 09:52 Go to next message
Ok i know the basic differences between a 18rc and 18rg block but my questions are. Is the anydifferences in the way the cranks etc bolt on. I wanna know if i can use a 18rc block and rebuild into a 18rg as i dont wanna strip my rg and be without an engine for a few weeks. Are the cranks the same between rg and rc. Im hoping to use a rc block and pistons and also crank maybe and rebuild it.(this is for turbo thats why the rc pistons)Can anyone see any problems with this. My main problem is the cranks if theres any differences.

I knew they were the same but my main concern was if the cranks were different in any way. Im also using the rc block because i have a friend who says he can drill out the blocks to make oil squirt up the pistons to cool them down. Im not sure if he means block or conrods but im using the rc block just incase.

u drill and tap into the oil galleries and put little nozzles in there and it literally squirts jets of oil on to the back of the piston to cool it

18RC and 18RG have the same bottom end (both cast cranks). The rods already have oil squirters in them for spraying oil in the direction of the gudgeon pin. Some of the oil should (in principle) land in the second hole in the top of the rod through to the gudgeon pin. This spray of oil would also cool the piston to some extent.

Becareful if drilling the block for oil squirters. You could easily make them too big and lower your oil pressure.

Edit - Or use proper oil squirters as MR DOHC just stated.

You wont be able to use the rc pistons. the rg pistons are fly cut for the valves, the rc pistons are not. hope this helps. rg pistons are difficult to find. i am in the process of rebuilding a rg using a rc block. the only other thing that is different is the dizzy mounting point. the eccentric shaft that operates the oil pump and dizzy from the rg block will be changed as well.

hope this helps

You can use rc pistons. I am using them to lower my compression for turbo. If you are after rg pistons you can buy mine if you dont need them in to much of a hurry. You only cant use rg pistons in a 18rc engine because of the dome head.
