MA61 Steering Fri, 23 July 2004 11:51 Go to next message
Problem is when turning left it gets to a point and sticks, it takes a good yank to bring it back straight. Now it only happens some of the time, anyone got any ideas?

Power steering rack munted? They regularly fail due to getting too hot.

Sounds like you have dodgy front end alignment, and if it happens intermitently that would suggest something is loose or excessively worn (eg bushes or ball joints). Your best bet is to take it to a suspension shop, once it's up on a hoist they'll be able to spot the problem right away.

Thanks for the help gents, ill take the thing down to a suspension place and get them to have a look. If they cant spot something wrong, looks like swapping over the steering rack (which we have a spare, but damn, Ive never had to do it before, but I'm imagining all kinds of drama involved)

Oil overheats due to pathetic 'cooler' infront of radiator
Cooks seals.

Your extractors wouldnt be helping.

Solved through fitment of oil cooler.

ok well i went to soccer and interupted progress

it actually doesnt seem too bad.

it took me the purchase of new tools to remove the steering rack bolts to the crossmember (56ft lbs!), had to use a breaker, with a large extention to get the purchase. (the car is on ramps at the front).

Thats as far as i got, after i installed a new brake master.

but after that, remove 2 cotter pins, figure out how to undo tie rod nuts, look like its a nut, with some crazy pattern on it.

remove the bolt holding the steering shaft into the rack (11mm bolt i think)

and pull the entire rack out with tie rods on it.

you can HAVE my rack if you want....its toast and leaking fluid, also has a FUBAR'd boot.

Based on what i heard (nathan and cruizda alike) the fluid heats up and rack dies. Im going to rerun my lines and install an oil cooler where the U bar is.

I got a spare rack rebuilt....should be the shit Smile

ok...

mine is leaking like nothing else out of the pinion seal (where intermediate shaft enters the rack). it practically just let go all of a sudden... ive got a kitty litter tray sopping up all the fluid everywhere. i was planning on dropping it tomorrow and trying to replace the seals (which i bought today).

wheres your old one leaking from glen?

you got the new one reco'd? price?

i wonder how hard it'd be to fully reco myself... just a few bearings and seals Rolling Eyes

anyway - how long you think till you have your old one out so i might have a crack at rebuilding it? i can continue to let mine leak for a while, but i dont know how long i can keep it up Smile

Racks are piss-easy to replace (done it too many times now). The only hard part is getting the ball joints out, but with the help of a BFH and lots of bishing they drop out eventually. Then you just remove the 4 bolts attaching it to the crossmember (one of them you have to access from under the car), undo the bolt on the steering column, and the whole thing drops out. Installation is the reverse of the removal.

itsjust taken me all day to get it out and put another one in

the ball ball joints on the tie rods wont sit flush with the underside of the mounting surfacing.

and i stripped the damn bolt holding the intermediary shaft in place!!!

piss me off! Eye Spin

anyone know how much play to expect from the mid-shaft (ball) joint between the rack-end and tie-rod?

see below:
(the joint thats between the rack and the tie rods: very bottom right hand solid arrow on the rack)

shouldnt be any movement, they can be fixed (squashed) to remove any movement though
anyone who reco's racks often should have the tooling to the press to do this....

Me too. Mind you, I already had the tie rod ends undone, but it took me all of 30 minutes.

I was expecting hours, but it was piss easy.

Glenn, $480 + GST to redo. Sounds like mine for $180 was a bargain !!!!!! Very Happy

bah! i scoff at your $180 rebuild! muuhahaha

as ive found tonight, rebuilding the sucker yourself is truley a piece of cake. i kid you not, piece of piss to strip, all bearings and seals are easily extracted, the toughest bit is the nylon valve and piston rings, but the EST-009 (cut down coke can) seems like itll make easy work of installation.

ill update tomorrow when she all goes back together Smile

cheers

Well done Ed, sounds like it should be another sticky.

At least my $180 rebuild was offset by selling my old one to Glenn so that he could pay even more !!!!!!!

Cheers

I had been thinking about rebuilding the spare rack in my garage for a couple of years now, but everyone told me it can't be done by a backyarder so I never pulled it apart. So now you're going to tell me I've put up with 2 years of no power steering for no good reason?? Gaaaaaagh!!!
